I just bought a '96 and the green light around the "D" went out yesterday. All the other lights are functioning. I checked in the owners manual and it looks like all those lights are controlled by the same fuse. Anyone have any ideas where I should start?

I'm kind of new to this! Thanks in advance!

Mine is the same way, I just thought that this was on purpose. It might get annoying having it on all the time while driving?

If you're talking about D on the transmission indicator stack between the speedo and the tach I'd start with a new lightbulb. It's a common characteristic of these trucks. Welcome to the board.

There are really three solutions.

1. Hit the top of the dash in the area above the cluster, REALLY HARD. (it's worked for some folks)

2. Buy a new bulb and replace. (it takes a while to get everything out that you need to remove before you even get to the bulb)

3. Live with it. (The green light can be annoying at night).

When I got mine that was the lone bulb out. I ordered all of the internal gauge and cluster bulbs as I did not want to have to go back in there.

Since that time (early march) I have been back in there three times to do the r/t mod, the cdl mod and looking for the cause of motor noise in the radio. So much for trying to stay ahead of the curve :(

Welcome to the wonderful world of mud!

And now the official welcome::flipoff2:

The light around the D is actually a little dimmer than the rest.. So its not so annoying at night as others would be.

There is a 4th solution (but its a rare occurrence and more of the indicators would be out)

P.S yes.. I'm plugging my own thread :)

Another addition to the percusive maintenance thread?

Mine was out when I purchased my 80 too. Look at it like this...if it was manual there wouldn't be a light anyway...WHat???

Re#1: In the immortal words of Yeager (Sam Sheppard in The Right Stuff), "just wang it down." This worked for me. (Broom stick not req'd.)

Re#2: If you go this route and you are a perfectionist, you might want to replace all of the bulbs in the gauge cluster while you're in there.

I went with Doc's #3 for a couple years...then it came back on by itself...

I prefer it off, personally...

Along w/ GBELL210, my tranny position plug had corroded. It was to the point where the "D" pin was shorting with other pins to cause nasty revs in the engine. I am guessing that the computer didn't know if the tranny was in drive, neutral, etc. I just pulled out the corroded culprit pin from the connector, which happened to be the "D". The tranny now functions fine, amazingly enough. And there is no "D" light on the dash, now.

Well my 80 has the same problem, after 2 years I like it the way it is now!!
:bounce:

Just wanted to let you know that I tried the "thwack" on the top of the dash board with the heel of my hand and it worked. Thanks everyone for your input!

And another convert to the merits of percussive maintenance.

do you really want another light on the dash to distract you ?

...well maybe you do.
