Totally agree about the Berlin campground. Was out there in April/May. A little cool, and rainy during the night, but an immaculate campground, and a the time, all the BBQs and firepits looked like they were newly installed. Just a great campground, and the shelters over the tables look like they'll be there for the next century.

That was the other impressive thing of note: The State Park guys emptied the trash cans EACH morning. And when a camp site is vacated they clean the leftover wood and/or charcoal ashes out of the camp grills and fire pits making way for the next campers. Crazy impressive!

If you ever want to come back out this way, I live in Big Smoky valley and would be glad to show you some places. I drive a FJ45 that is set up for camping. The Smoky Valley side of the Opher trail is much rougher. Just let me know.

That would be great! We've spent quite a bit of time exploring the Hot Creek and Monitor ranges too the past couple of years (check out my Explore Nevada 2011 trip notes and photos on this BBCNN site).

Question for you: From the just on the west side of Barcelona Summit in the Toquima range I noticed, on our trip this summer, a Forest Service trail (numbered but I can't remember what # it was) heading west. Any idea how far that trail goes? Looks like it would be a fine place to set up camp when its hot downstairs ;)

Spectacular!
I can wait to be able to wheel again. The photo skills have gotten really good too!

From Barcelona you have three choices; 1.There is a dead end trail that leads into a canyon with some nice camping spots. 2. you can drop down into Monitor Valley through Silver creek taking the north fork in the road or 3. you can follow the road all the way down silver creek toward Bald Mountain wash. There is a nice spot on the meadow canyon side of Barcelona along a creek to camp also.
