I just purchased a 99 lx 470 with 200000 miles and am getting all of the service done as a baseline for the future. i changed the oil to mobile 1 10w30 and was reading in the service history that the previous owner used gastrol gtx 10 w 30 at regular intervals. do you think i might get some leaks from changing to synthetic oil?

I think that leak thing is a myth. Synthetic oils are far superior in every way. If you search around here you will find a lot of people run synthetic with no issues. The 4.7 is pretty easy on oil, and the synthetics won't break down as fast so less changes for you!

** EDIT** Found this little write up. Pretty good read.

I would class it as a myth...worst case, if you do get leaks (which I doubt you will), simply go back to dino oil on the next change. 5W-30 is what's spec'd by Lexus/Toyota...far easier on winter start ups, if you're in a chilly area.

If it ever happened, I think it's a holdover from when vehicles had seals that were "conditioned" by certain types of oil. If a seal can leak because of a different blend of oil, then it was probably about to leak anyway.

My 2 cents, if you are going to change it every 5k regardless, use a good conventional (Castrol/Mobil) and save the money for something else. Oil quality is so good these days, you can likely run over 5k on "regular" oil and be fine.

I use synthetic or synthetic blend Mobil, whatever my guy has at the time and change somewhere between 5k-7.5k.

^^ Ditto here. Changed to Mobil 1 at around 134k and no leaks (now at 154k+).

You'll be fine.

Leaks are not an issue (I've switched three high mileage vehicles with no problem), but you might want to change the filter more frequently early on as the synthetic oil will "clean" out some of the "sludge" left by normal dyno juice. The vintage Porsche guys found this to be the case, that was their recommendation, and I have found it to be useful. Filters are relatively cheap. Lots of threads on the different ones. I'm using the rebranded Wix filters sold at Napa (and have used Wix on my 60-series and 80-series, which all were in the 200k mile + range when sold).

YMMV

I use the NAPA Gold filters...pn 1516 fits the Toyota 100 V-8, but it's half again as long as the direct replacement filter, so more filtering material. Ask you NAPA store when the 1/2-off filter sale happens...at my local store, it's normally in February and September. If you have multiple vehicles, you'll get great filters and save a ton of money.

I use the same as Steve and buy them through fleetfilterdotcom in batches of a dozen. I go through them more quickly since I have two 100-series trucks.

No leaks from changing to synthetic oil . If you find leaks they were there before changing oil.

Thanks everyone for your advice. I will leave it alone and see.
