There is a layer on our LX470 lcd that has gotten worse to the point where I can hardly see the image, but I'm pressing selection (eg. aircon fan speed etc) by memory of their locations on LCD screen :)
But this past week a layer of the LCD screen popped up and I'm wondering if I can just it off completely? And if I do so, will I still be able to press selections on the LCD based on my memory of the settings for aircon etc? Or is this layer integral to the touchscreen?

Any advice or experience from anyone who has dealt with this situation would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

ps. Plan is probably to eventually try this : Successfully installed a Tesla Style headunit into a 2005 LX470. - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/successfully-installed-a-tesla-style-headunit-into-a-2005-lx470.1136288/

If its anything like a laptop/tv screen (which it probably is) Maybe, but IMHO no.
Somebody used a cleaner they weren't supposed to on it. Happened alot to the comps I was working on when the lockdown happened and most people went WFH. Trying to clean their screen. Used something that was too harsh like acetone/alcohol/etc. Screens became foggy/delaminated/ruined.
If its anything like the two above its probably the anti glare layer. Removing it might be fine but it also might not. If it's just the anti-glare layer you'll just have to deal with a (depending on the time of day/lighting conditions) hard to see screen.

But what I'd be worried about is the touch layer may be attached to it.
That comes off. The screen will display fine but you cant click/touch anything on it. Making it useless, unless you want to use the wheel controls for everything.

Two choices IMHO. 3 if you wanna throw money away.
1. Ignore it.
2. Buy a new HU.
3. Try and have the screen replaced. I highly doubt your going to be able to replace the screen for significantly cheaper than a new HU.

Thanks for the tips. Think I'll leave it alone and start hunting for a cheap HU like Juicemode did.

FWIW, I didn't clean the LCD, but there was a period where the car sat exposed to hot sun. And recall it started going downhill from there! So, don't idiotically cook your car's interior like I did.
