Ok... been awhile but back to working on my truck and I'm currently building the rear bumper. I wanted it clean and complimenting of the front bumper. I also wanted kind of a universal bumper, expo style and tough enough for rocks. It is constructed of 5x2x3/16'' tube and 6x2x3/16'' tube as well as plate. it needs to have a good trailer hitch as I pull a trailer quite often full of steel. for recovery I'm just going to use 3.5''x3/4'' flat stock to create clevis mounts. I was going to incorporate my recovery pockets (like my front bumper) but there really wasn't any good spot to fit them in because of the swingouts.
ill probably cut in lights and make removable mud flaps. I'm also going to have some tube work on the sides but not on the top like found on most. I don't think I need it on mine and liked the way it looks on the side of the wing when I held a piece of scrap up, breaks up the flatness. I did cut the rear cross member as I didn't want to deal with working around it. I gained almost 3'' of clearance at the corners as they are swept up. But not too much that the stock exhaust is so exposed. on the side wings I sectioned the 6x2 and took 3x1 out of the bottoms to give some dimension and mimic how my front bumper tapers under the truck. they also slightly raked up towards the back. because they are tube they can also be sealed and possibly used for air tanks. ill probably cut in HI lift pockets. I do have an extra winch and I'm pondering tucking it back there as well.
Things I'm going to carry: 2 - 3 gallon rotopax, a 60'' extreme HI lift jack ,35'' spare, shovel, ax, maxtrax, (the trax will probably end up on the roof) I also will add some lighting both reverse and utility. I also want a tray for cooking and prep. I will also make a ladder to acces the rack which will follow the build of this. so all that brings me to the swingouts. I'm kinda torn about these. There will be two, things will be positioned for best visibility.
I really cant decide as of the moment what I'm going to do for the pivots. spindles? busings? possibly double heim joints? I think I'm leaning towards the heims for mine. Any input from anyone? I know this topic has been gone over repeatedly... I may fabricate the latching mechanism from stainless myself if I don't find an off the shelf item. I like the latch Ben of Dissent uses on his 100 series rear.
Any ways here are a couple pics of it as of today. I have to get more material tomorrow and finish up the main bumper, plate under the bottom outer corners and acroos the space under the tailgate. then onto the swingouts. what are you guys thoughts??

I am liking the angles. What are you envisioning for the side tube work? I would think a solid spindle with 2 bearings would provide the most stable and servicable option for the swing out pivots. On one of my cruisers is havery a slee rear and the spindle is very stout.

I am looking to put a front and rear on my other 80, watching this very closely.

Oh man I would love one of those bumpers for my 80.. too bad the shipping to NZ would be astronomical. That bottle opener is so fuggin sweet.

Have been looking at those prolinks too.. how do you rate them for the money?

Thanks man! as far as shipping its not terrible if you have patience. I quoted one to Australia and it was around 400 bucks and 47 days.
As far as the Factor55 stuff goes I believe its the best of what's out there currently. Iam a dealer for them and its the only stuff I put on my bumpers.

thanks again

Excellent, really like the factory ish profile

Thank you! I was kinda going for " Factory Ish" lol. the side plate size before it tapers down is 3". Roughly the same size as the body line bulge that runs down the side of our trucks. And @Golgo13 caught the factory aluminum step on there in the pic. I'm going to try and incorporate that too. Really I just kinda let the bumper take shape after I cut everything off with keeping in mind what needs to fit. I didn't want to cut the frame, just the cross member . The main section tapers up right from where the sides of the frame rails end. And I had to leave enough material to mount the sides which worked out to what you see so far.

Thanks
Rich

I just found your build thread and blazed through it! Amazing and beautiful work! I literally read from post 1 until now. Simply incredible!

any more views of that rear?

Truly thanks for all the kind words guys..I appreciate the support.
Yesterday was a loss with all the other things going on. But I did get material. Steel wise.. still didn't order swing out pivots of some sort?? Undecided. Feel free to give opinions/experiences. But I'm starting back on it now. I'll post the progression later.

I wouldn't use heims, I think it would look less finished when all said and done.

You are very creative, why don't you make your own spindle and add a cool machined threaded cap with your logo on top.

Here are some more pics as it is now. I have to change the outer top back corner of the wings. To clear the swingouts. There was something about those I didn't like anyways. But it's getting there. The clevis points are 3/4" and pass through the bumper. As does the receiver. The pics with the light pockets are just hung to show possible location. They will be sunken in to the bumper and leave about a 1/4" reveal.. once I decide were their going.
