Currently, my fj62 is sitting at a local shop. The mechanic is stumped and essentially doesn't have the time to keep chasing this ghost problem. He is a good guy, and isn't even charging me so far since nothing he/we have tried has panned out. The truck cranks but will not start. At first he thought it was the igniter/coil. We tried several, all to no avail. Tried replacing the dizzy next, also to no avail. He says there are other things he wants to try but he hasn't had the time to do it yet. The truck has been sitting for three months now. Basically I just want to get it running again so I can get it out of there and figure out what to do next.

So...if anyone feels that they could help, the truck is sitting in Broadway right now (near Sanford).

I know you guys are probably gonna have questions, ask away. I'm sure I'll be better able to provide information by responding questions anyway.

Check the basics: sounds like you have spark (but be sure to check); do you have fuel at the fuel rail?; and of course, air?

If you have fuel pressure / air / and a good spark then it should run.

Tell us what happened to get it at the shop to begin with please. As in what happened ? What was it doing before it died ? Are the Plugs getting a good Spark ?

Brother had this problem recently, start with the fuel pressure relaease valve on the fuel rail. If you have fuel squirting out there then move forward to the coil and check spark....sounds like you have that. So next is to check the fuel pressure regulator and then fuel filter, lastly fuel pump. If your FPR goes bad inevitably you will quickly loose your fuel pump.

From there move to the electronics and check the basics, fuses make sure your EFI fuse is working correctly and that the MAS (mass air flow sensor) behind the air filter hose is connected and working properly. If something has shorted out it's likely that your EFI fuse will blow first.

After checking all this gives us an update, also where are you located and is the truck at a location where the mechanic is someshat familiar with these vehicles. There's alot of tricks to these trucks that are actually pretty simple to fix if you know some history on them.

Keep us updated.

If you're still having issues when I get home from school I will gladly drive over and help get this one figured out. I've had this happen, and can't remember what all I had to do but have the FSM and would remember when I got my hands greasy.

He told me it wasn't a fuel issue.

Basically, cruising about 55 mph, the engine simply cut out. I coasted over to the shoulder and had it towed :frown:
Interestingly enough, the next day I went back to the shop where I had it towed, and it started right up. It made some weird not so good sounding noises when it did though. I don't think he's been able to start it since.

That would be awesome and something tells me that may be the case. FSM to the rescue?:hhmm:

Seems to me if it's sitting at the mechanic and he can't figure it out, you'd be better off having it towed back to your place. If you can get your hands on a FSM from someone in the club, you should be able to run through the troubleshooting procedure in the ignition section, etc.

I don't have a FSM for your 62, but have a Chilton that covers up to 1988 (sorta POS book) and a Max Ellery that starts at 1990. You're welcome to borrow them.

Plus, if it's at your house, a few us could probably make a trip to Sanford to help take a look at it with you (hamom?).

This issue is electrical more than likely, your fuel pump isn't getting the call to send fuel. The fuel pump is directly related to the ignition system in that aspect.

Unplug the MAF (AFM). If that doesn't work, check every electrical connection you can see. From the sparkplugs to the ECM. If you still have issues, check for leaks in your intake tubing.

That could be costly. I'm hoping to get it running and limp it back home. See, here's where things get complicated, because I'm pretty sure it needs some work done on the trans

OK, maybe you don't want to pay for towing. The other option is to ask someone in ONSC to help you with placing the truck on a trailer and trailering it back to your place. I know two people who have trailers for their 40s... Just a thought.

Worst case you could put the 62 on a Uhaul car hauler and pull it with something like say an 80. ;)

Offer still stands if you could use one of my manuals...

One of my Toy FSM's (88 4runner, 22re) mentions the following:

IGNITION
symptom - Engine will not start (cranks ok)
1) ignition problems: ignition coil, igniter, distributor
2) spark plugs
3) spark plug wires damaged

EFI SYSTEM
symptom - No start (cranks ok)
1) check diagnostic system (EFI computer codes)
2) check for vacuum leaks in air intake line
3) check ignition spark
4) check ignition timing
5) check fuel supply to injector
6) check fuel pump switch in air flow meter
7) check spark plugs
8) check air valve

I would think if you're trying to crank the engine and it won't fire up, that the EFI computer would throw a code. I would short the test connector with a paper clip and check for codes yourself.

I have a trailer in Southern Pines and I'll be home Sun-Tue. We'd need a hand winch though!

Worst case if a winch is needed to get the truck on the trailer, you could probably use a pulley (hooked to a front trailer rail, etc.) and do a 90 degree pull with a winch from the side of the trailer... Of course, you probably need something holding the side of the trailer from sliding too.

That or park the trailer in front of the cruzer. Unhook trailer from tow vehicle. Connect tow vehicle to cruzer via snatchstrap. Pull fwd (pulling cruzer onto parked trailer) Hook up to trailer and done...
