A/C strength on FJ60

Anyone have a idea on closing off the cargo area in order to help the A/C cool the truck down. I was thinking that Spector used to sell something that closed it off. My A/C works well, the fan is strong, but it takes forever to cool off on real hot days. The windows are not tinted, I know that would help but I am trying to avoid 3-400 dollars to tint for 3 monthes out of the year and the truck is a second vehicle. If I closed off the rear cargo and got a couple of those child shades I bet it would help. THanks for any advice.
 
Mine blows ice chunks it gets so cold....
you could put camo curtain up, that would look cool.
Buy a can of r-134/a , the one with the guage on the applicator, and put it in.
The quage will tell you what to add or not......one love
 
paint vehicle white... LOL and there is a keep doggie in the back screen that could work for what you want to do - i even think there is one made of plexiglass so you can keep the same blind spots... i really think a service might be in order... when my A/C is working properly (in florida, in the summer with a dark car) it gives me goose bumps if i am wearing shorts.

as a sign guy i would recommend making the screen yourself. go by a couple of your city's larger sign shops (DO NOT CALL) and ask if they have any old polycarbonate faces laying around. almost all do and would be happy for you to take it instead of having to ship it off to the landfill. you could then wash it off with the right thinner... ask them which one to use to keep from frosting it (depends on whether it is lexan or generic). then make a cardboard template in front of your rear seats when they are tilted up. you can then cut the poly carbonate to size with a jig saw and install... might have to come in rear door or cut in two pieces and bolt together... think about it if that is really the way you want to go... it would be free except for the thinner and labor.

and talk about window tinting... make sure you check your state law re: what is allowed... locally, a couple of policemen got uppity about the tint being too dark on some of the lowriders, custom cars and suv's and started giving out tickets... most likely the darker 'limo tints' will not be allowed in some states at least on the driver's windows - so if you go across country you might consider that... installing tint is a simple fix and not rocket science.

TINT THOSE WINDOWS YOURSELF. Because of the glass being so flat, they are easy (relativley) to tint yourself. Get some limo tint from Advanced Auto for 14 bucks for the roll and spend an hour doing the three back windows.

tinting the cargo area will make a huge difference. that is a lot of sun collection happening back there.

I would worry about destroying rear vis with a barrier... but if you get something clear it could work

adding a roofrack with a solid floor can help a bunch with shading the roof

tuning up your A/C will help too- check the radiator in front to make sure the fins are pretty straight, and get the bugs and dirt out.
 
The A/C should blow cold enough to cool the truck pretty quick. I can see fog come out of my A/C on humid hot days! It's always been able to cool the truck but my windows are tinted from the rear doors back.
 
have you tried turning the idle adjust knob just under the fan box in the cab. mine was set to something like 1500 rpm. which means that it completly dies in traffic. leaving me hot and humid.

** note. if your cooling system isn't up to snuff then turning your idle to minimum could cause a overheat on a hot day in slow traffic.
 
if you have a Milford cargo barrier, they make a screen that closes off the cargo area.......to help the front cool

my AC on my 60 will go down to ZERO........
 
Nope, 134a since I installed it from an FJ60 about 3 years ago!
 
Mine was an install of a used system only 2-3 years ago. New dryer and hoses and all else came from the other vehicle.
 
Yes is certainly was an R12 system originally. I know that R134a is not as efficient as R12 but it still gets my truck cold. I also have all the windows from the rear seat and back tinted as well which will help.
 
r-12 is the only way to go for me

when I rebuilt my ac, I considered the 134a option. However, it was also recomended to switch to a electric fan to assist with cooling. Why change over anyway? Make sure your system is leak free. Pick up some r-12 and charge it your self. (using your AC supplemental manual for the pressure limits of course).
