Title: Land Cruiser 200 (2008, 1VD-FTV) A/C not working – blinking A/C light with codes 21, 24, 42, 78

Post:
Hi everyone,

I’m having an issue with the air conditioning on my 2008 Land Cruiser 200 (VDJ200, 1VD-FTV diesel).

When I press the A/C button, the light starts blinking and the system does not blow cold air. I entered the self-diagnosis mode and got the following codes:

  • 21 – in-vehicle temperature sensor (open/short)
  • 24 – ambient temperature sensor (open/short)
  • 42 – vehicle speed sensor / damper control signal
  • 78 – compressor malfunction

When I press the A/C button I can clearly hear a abnormal clac from the compressor clutch, so it looks like the ECU is sending the command, but the compressor doesn’t seem to pump and the lines don’t get cold. The button blink.

Has anyone experienced this combination of codes?
The gas was fulfilled 1 week ago

Any advice on how to confirm the problem before replacing parts would be really appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

If the A/C had to be refilled a week ago, there must be a refrigerant leak. Are you sure it didn’t leak out again? The other thing to confirm is proper operation of the RECIRC/FRESH flap. Put the system in RECIRC and access the cabin filter. Then operate the RECIRC/FRESH button and see if the change door functions properly.

Thanks Sandroad, the Recirc work perfectly! I Pushed the valve o the charge plug for A/C and there is gas inside.

Today when pushed the AUTO button the compressor rattled for 2 or 3 seconds.

Thanks for the support, I'm travelling in Greece and it's really hot

ok guys the problem was here, the rubber inside the pulley, was destroyed!
The compressor is ok, A/C works again

The reason I asked for the part number is because my AC would get slightly warm at times and be fine at other times. I thought maybe it was low on freon, so I took my truck to a dealer, which I never do, paid them a pretty penny for a recharge, since they said, they found a very slight leak in my condenser and I was a little low. After a day, it’s still the same, if even warmer at times. I just crawled under my truck and the entire compressor and clutch look fine, so it's probably not the same issue you had, and after some more online sleuthing, it looks like I’d probably target the compressor control (solenoid) valve, except Toyota doesn’t just sell that part. I see a video of someone doing one on another Toyota. I’m wondering if anyone has done one on an LC/LX200? I really don’t want to pay for a new compressor if it’s just that valve. It looks like I can just remove the passenger wheel and those protective plastic covers to get to it. Assuming I don't 'eff it up' trying to pull it out, do I have to have the system evacuated of freon? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Edit: It looks like I do have to vacuum out the freon prior to this job, so this might be left up to 'an expert'. :/.
