Title: Land Cruiser 200 (2008, 1VD-FTV) A/C not working – blinking A/C light with codes 21, 24, 42, 78

Post:
Hi everyone,

I’m having an issue with the air conditioning on my 2008 Land Cruiser 200 (VDJ200, 1VD-FTV diesel).

When I press the A/C button, the light starts blinking and the system does not blow cold air. I entered the self-diagnosis mode and got the following codes:

  • 21 – in-vehicle temperature sensor (open/short)
  • 24 – ambient temperature sensor (open/short)
  • 42 – vehicle speed sensor / damper control signal
  • 78 – compressor malfunction

When I press the A/C button I can clearly hear a abnormal clac from the compressor clutch, so it looks like the ECU is sending the command, but the compressor doesn’t seem to pump and the lines don’t get cold. The button blink.

Has anyone experienced this combination of codes?
The gas was fulfilled 1 week ago

Any advice on how to confirm the problem before replacing parts would be really appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

If the A/C had to be refilled a week ago, there must be a refrigerant leak. Are you sure it didn’t leak out again? The other thing to confirm is proper operation of the RECIRC/FRESH flap. Put the system in RECIRC and access the cabin filter. Then operate the RECIRC/FRESH button and see if the change door functions properly.

Thanks Sandroad, the Recirc work perfectly! I Pushed the valve o the charge plug for A/C and there is gas inside.

Today when pushed the AUTO button the compressor rattled for 2 or 3 seconds.

Thanks for the support, I'm travelling in Greece and it's really hot
