Well, went out to my cruiser yesterday and it wouldnt start. Wouldnt even click but the clock and radio presets stayed. Sometimes with the key in the on position there would be a rough sounding motor running under the hood on the left (drivers) side. Not sure what that is? So get AAA to tow it and we try to jump start it and it starts right up? Took it to the dealer anyway and they cant seem to find anything wrong? Anybody have any ideas?

Getting the 90000 mile timing belt, water pump, serpentine belt, plugs, thermostat, etc done. Wow, much more expensive than I thought. Probably $1200!

On my drivers door they say the door lock solenoid is bad and it costs $550. Does that sound right?

THanks,
BC

I am having the waterpump, t-belt, accessory belts done there is no way it will be $1200. The t-belt by it self is only $369 plus an $80 waterpump. Total should be around $500.

They are saying $380 for the t belt, $380 for waterpump (175 for pump), $100 for serp belt, $20 bucks each for plugs, 10 bucks for taillight, thermostat?, 59 bucks to check out the door, miscellaneous labor, tax and it ends up being about $1200

I've got the finicky driver's side door lock solonoid thing going on, too. I looked at the Champion Toyota parts site, and I believe the part alone was ~$185.

I agree. 1200 is way too much. Should be around 600. Remember.....ALL Toyoyta Dealer shops have the ability (and will if they want your business) to reduce their charges by either giving discounts or freebees (sp?).

They might be double-charging you for labor on the water pump. On most vehicles, when you change the t-belt/chain cover, you have to pull the water pump/pulleys first. So either way, it has to come off. The only difference in price should be the part. Some dealers (like South Bay Toyota in Torrance, CA) will allow you to bring in your own parts! Even $175 for the pump sounds maybe a little steep, but maybe that's part of the LC markup? After all, the brake MC is over a grand for the part alone!

One time, I tested one service salesman's knowledge by asking him if there was any labor in a timing chain change on a 22re that coincides with a head gasket change (ie, the FSM specs to hoist the engine 2", pull the head, and drop the oil pan in the procedure to change the chain. So Toyota recommends 10 hrs labor @ $75/hr, hence $750 labor. In reality, the shortcut is to not touch the head or hoist the engine and drop the front two bolts of the oil pan for only 4 hrs labor. So he was telling me it would cost $1300 for a timing chain change, PLUS $1200 to change the HG (implying that they use the shortcut method yet charge for the long method!) Turns out, I found an indep. toyota service shop owned by an ex-toyota mechanic who told me he'd pull the head and drop the front two bolts on the oil pan to change the chain for $550 labor, plus I could supply my own OEM parts (only $60 for an upper block gasket kit from Toyota in Houston at that time!). BTW, I called an indep. Lexus shop and they quoted 20 hrs labor for $1500!!! It's amazing how prices vary.

It's late and I too tired to go searching... has anyone on this forum compiled a list of honest/reasonable (if that combination isn't too much to ask for!) indy Toyota mechanics in the U.S.?

Seems like it would be a good idea.

Your symptoms sound like bad starter contacts!

The symptoms you have described sound like exactly what happened when my contacts were going out. It wouldn't turn over, but the accessories worked. Then after like 5-6 tries it suddenly started with no problem. This was an intermittent problem for me in the beginning, but progressively got worse over time. That may explain why the dealer found nothing wrong.

I would have to agree with starter. I had mine replaced at 130K miles after showing the same signs. Not another problem since then.
