In my '99, I have a very loud sound during the beginnings of acceleration within gears for a few seconds. I can't describe it very well. It's not a screech. It's a whine with a very definite rattle within it.

What would be some of the most common problems that would make this occur that I can explore?

And if I need to give more information to help diagnose the problem, please ask me questions.

Christo, thanks for the quick reply.

So, forgive my ignorance, is my solution to simply order a new cat converter heat shield?

You can try and pry some space between the shields that’s making the noise. Or possibly put a small dent in the shield with a ball peen hammer to make a type of stiffener in the shield near the seam that’s making the resonating sound? Its basically the gap between the two seems on the shield that sort of hums at certain rpm’s. The only thing you can do is tighten up the gap or open up the space between them IMO. You will need to have some one rev up the car very slowly in the driveway to try and duplicate the noise to determine the proper fix for the problem.
Hope this helps.
