My 99 4 runner (V6, 4WD) has noticeble play at the rear drive shaft u-joint when grabbing it by hand and twisting while under the car. I'm guessing thats also the source of a GRRR sound at highway speed.

Question: Whats the easiest fix? Truck has 200k miles...but is in GREAT shape. Can I simply pull off the whole drive shaft and slip a new rear tailshaft/u joint assembly in the driveshaft and bolt her back up??

Front U joint is nice and tight. I've greased them every 10-15k miles since new. Is it cheaper to just buy a Used driveshaft and bolt in place?

Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

Brad

Easiest fix? Are you aware that you can replace u joints?

I am not...! I've never dealt with driveshaft issues. Done plenty of CV joints and axle shafts.

How easy...I'l listening...? And thank you for responding.

I changed one on my Taco with a shop hammer, snap ring pliers, a few sockets, and a piece of 2x4...on my tailgate. Just don't loose those tiny needle bearings.
