On my recently purchased 99 4Runner, 3.4L when I drive away from my house in the cooler mornings now it will delay upshifting from 2nd for a few blocks if I hold the rpm at say 2000. If I rev it up further then it will upshift at maybe 2500 rpm. Is this normal as it appears as though maybe it needs a certain temperature before it upshifts at a lower rpm?
Does anyone know if this is the case or what?
My 96 with the 2.7L doesn't do this that I've noticed.

From everything I've read, it seems to be normal.
Read a lot of threads asking just that.

It does that to speed up engine/catalytic convertor warm-up.

oh great and burn a half gallon of gas in the first 10 blocks from home...hmmm oh well still better than letting it sit on fast idle in the driveway for an extra 5 minutes.

thanks guys

How much are you pushing on the gas? Generally, you will notice that upon start up, the truck will sound loud. After a couple of minutes, it will quiet down and the truck will shift normally. During this warm up time, where the fluids are getting pushing to every nook and cranny, you need to slow it down and be very very gentle on the throttle. I barely push on mine.

was normal on my 98. quickens up the warmup to optimum temp. wont burn that much more gas really, unless youre at WOT, which you shouldnt be a) first thing in the morning ;) , and b) when the motor is still cold....

That happens almost instantly.
The louder part is usually from the silicon in the fan clutch.

Oh I just accelerate lightly for the first while for sure. I just noticed that it didn't want to upshift on light acceleration, checked to see I had it in D rive, and then gave it more throttle as it continues to roar when going past 2000 rpm to 2200 even and no upshift so I just thought it odd that's all. When warmer and under my normal light acceleration it will upshift under 2000 rpm even. thought it is likely a normal thing but just wanted to confirm it with people that are in the know:D
