I have a 1998 Toyota Land Cruiser with the following issues and am hoping someone ha sthe answer or possible solution. The truck is from Washington, but travelled to California this week. Once it got into hot weather 108 degrees, the vehicles starts sputtering under load. At idle it runs smooth. It will not get above 40-45 m.p.h. when this happens. New plugs, new wires, new fuel filter, new fuel pump, newer charcoal canister. I am losing my mind here. Any help would be appreciated.

Then fuel filter (doubtful) or fuel pump. Also, clean throttle body and MAF. Do you have techstream?

New throttle body (Feb 25). I will clean the MAF and change the fuel filter today, hoping for a fix. I do not have techstream, but will downlaod it today, maybe that will show something? Remember, it only has this issue with outside temps above 95 degrees.

Only happening when hot would typically be a fuel pump issue but you say that is new. Is it OEM or at least a high-quality pump? Could also be an electrical issue where the heat is causing increased resistance.

Mine sputtered when two injectors were going out, but it was not temperature-dependent and it also threw codes for misfires on those two cylinders. However, the injectors did have increased resistance when I tested them.

Its from Autozone lol, you might be right. I just ordered the fuel pump from Toyota, comes in on Tuesday. I appreciate the feedback!!!

coils are new as well, no codes, Im thinking it has something to do with the fuel system.
Just to make sure, could the CEL light be burnt out? Has it been scanned for codes? I’m only asking because CEL was burned out on mine when I purchased it.

Not a bad suggestion, I have the scangauge 2 attached to obd, no pending or active codes. I just replaced the fuel filter and MAF, going to go road test this afternoon to see if this fixed it.

hahahaha, just finished the road test and it is still doing the smae thing. It drove with no issues this morning, but when temps are high outside, it starts the sputtering under load once at operating temperature.

Check your short and long fuel trims, an OBD scanner can show you that. Bank1 and Bank2 should have the same reading if not identical. If this is the case, it’s likely your Fuel Pump.

Yup, as expected, Bank 2 is compensating. 99% positive culprit is your Fuel Pump. But do a full inspection on all of your basic fuel and vacuum related components like fuel lines/fittings and vacuum hoses including intake items like maf, intake hose and throttle body see if something is loose or broken. From the reading of your OBD STLT fuel trims, your system is running lean.

Fuel pump will be here tomorrow at 1000. I will run through everything again and see if I might have missed something . I wil report back. Thanks for your advice.

I do not have any codes pending or active, I did end up changing out the fuel pump. Thanks for the link.
