98-99 Rear Locker

I am looking for a 98-99 LC 100. Question...Does the rear locker work in any gear? Or, do you have to have it in 4 wheel drive, etc?

You have to have it in four wheel drive...

The US 100 series is full time 4wd and the rear locker will work in any transmission gear, even reverse.

RDL will work only in Low Range.
Easy mod to change that tho', so that it will work also in Hi Range

hang on, the rear diff lock....if its arb locks the diff when the switch is on, any gear any time

it will work fully only if the CENTER diff lock is on, otherwise if a front wheel looses traction all drive will shoot out that shaft, rear wheel will not turn.

in the low box the CDL comes on auto, but this can be stopped by removing a plug from the back of the transfer box.....this also improves the gear change smoothness while in low range without any locks on

No you do not want to pull a plug on the t case to disable your cdl you want to do the "pin 7" mod. Just search on that.

You want to have the center diff lock usable so that you can have real 4 wheel drive rather than all wheel drive for one example

IIRC it doesn't, but the transmission does, the shift points change, so by doing the PIN 7 mod you get selectable CDL any time, which allows RDL in High or Low range when CDL engaged, and correct shift points in low range.

interesting....so when switching from high box to low the gears change at different revs?

i know the CDL definitely still works after removing the plug from the box so that not a problem

i definetly didnt notice any difference in gear changes after removing the plug off the box apart from a major improvement in comfort during changes if the vehicle was in drive.....with the CDL on it was sticky as and jerked on the change.....so maybe dumbing the box down is a good thing

i normally drive with '2nd start' on in the low box anyway as if i need 1st i will select it and change manually to 2nd or Drive when required

i dont know what spec the vehicle is....98 jap import
