Yes it is a plug in setup. I think the hardest part was taking off the trim panel on the flor to run a wire to the Driver's side.

They didn't have one in stock here either, took a couple days.

Did you disconnect the wires to the existing trailer harness/converter? Did that fix it?

Thanks for the follow-up.

OK, I finally got a chance to spend some time with this brake light issue.

I bypassed the trailer converter as MoGas recommended and plugged the taillight harness back and it did NOT make the brake lights work. The bulbs work, as when I turn on the headlights, it comes on. When I depress the brakes, both sides does not light up, only the high center one.

I have ordered the Hoppy 43405 and am ready to install it, but I may NOT have a faulty converter as I thought. Truck will get out of park, no problems there. I wonder if it could be a bad brake pedal switch? Of course fuses are fine.

I'm going to read up on that a little more.

Thanks,

Chuck

I climbed under the dash to look over the brake pedal switch, but see nothing obvious. I'm not sure what else to check, anyone with any new ideas?

TIA,

Chuck

You are going to have to get serious about this now. I doubt it is the switch as I believe it controls the park lock also. I would start by taking a test light or meter to the connection at the PS panel and work your way forward and check for power at all the connections.

PM me your email and when I get home ~3pm I'll email you the section of my manual on the brake lamp circuit. It is 93 but should be close enough.

Did you ever find a solution to this problem?
The same thing is happening on my manual 95 FZJ80.
Fuse is fine, brakes still work, centre light works, just not the outside lights. All flashers, reverse and tail lights work.

Need to test the brake light wiring and re inspect the brake bulbs. They're dual filiament which means the park bulb portion can be working, and the brake portion can be blown.

If the high mount stoplight works, your switch and fuse and front portion of the wiring is intact. Check at the trailer converter towards the lamp sockets for faults.

more than likely the culprit is the wires behind the rear quarter panels, behind the driver side wheel well. unbolt the jack holder and you will see your wires underneath. I had the same issue only to find out I had a small electrical fire caused by water being kicked up and into the rear drivers side bottom quarter panel where the wires are housed (there is a small hole under there).

When this happened to me it was a fuse associated with the towing wiring. There was a short in the trailer that I pulled and it blew a fuse.
