I've been having problems with my 4wd in my 4Runner, and I took a good look into it today. My ADD system functions correctly with the exception of the switch on the top of the transfer case that detects whether it is in 4wd or not. Regardless of the position of the transfer case shift lever, there is no continuity.

Also, with all 4 tires off the ground, the transfer case physically doesnt transmit power to the front drive shaft. As far as I can tell its a problem with the transfer case. It worked about a week ago, and I have no idea why it would stop working.

Do you think my transfer case is shot? Am I missing something here? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

It sounds like you are saying that the truck shifts into 4wd fine, but there's a sensor or position switch for the Tcase that isn't getting the signal that it's in 4wd, and thus you can't shift into low range?

Sounds like you need to get the repair manual and a VOM and start testing. I doubt your entire transfer case is shot, unless there were other symptoms of its doom.

Not sure what years and trim levels they came in, but some of the transfer cases had an electric actuator on them that assisted in the operation of the case. I don't remember the specifics on them. I don't have one myself, but I have seen one before. They look like this:

That piece with the vacuum tube and electrical connectors on it is what I am talking about. Normal j-shift cases (what I have) look like this:

Note the lack of such an actuator.

I would check and see if you have the actuator version of the case. If so, I would imagine your problem has something to do with it. Regular j-shift cases are mechanically operated, so if the ADD is working, then you would be good to go.

Don't see an edit button but - the easy way to tell on the transfer case type is if you have a selector rocker switch on your transfer case shift lever.

The ones I have seen have had a selector switch there.

His truck is a 5-speed... it *should* have a j-shift case IIRC. The only electronics would be the 4x4 indicator switch.

It may be different for Tacomas, but that funky actuator-assisted case was mated to a a 5-speed.

I bought the whole setup to swap a 5-speed into my 4runner. Ditched that case and kept my original J-shift.
