Was down in PA last week and on Friday morning as I was leaving the hotel my boss spotted a pie plate size spot under my truck. Well I've been loosing antifreeze very slowly and even though I've found some small leaks it has persisted. This was obviously the lower radiator hose that goes from the pipe to the radiator. Not real serious just old and swollen and leaking at one end.

Called the wife and asked her to locate a hose if possible. Well no local dealer had it but NAPA would have it by 2:00. Arrived home at around 3:30 and drove over to get the hose. Both the computer and their catalog has the hose numbers mixed uyp for the 2 hoses. So I got the [pipe to engine hose instead of the pipe-radiator one.

They did however call a few dealers and found one that had the hose and got me the wholesale price.

So the 8733 hose which is listed for the pipe-rad hose is actually the pipe-engine hose and the 8732 which is listed as the pipe-engine hose is the pipe-rad hose.

So if you are in a pinch for a hose and they don't have it on hand ask them to get out the catalog as they have excellent pictures with measurments for the hoses.

I never have these problems, 'cause I use Cdan. In fact, a box arrived yesterday with the correct Toyota lower and upper rad hoses and the pipe hose for the new 80. Nice price, too. Towing season has arrived, and with it some hot towing on mountain passes.

The upper hose on this thing is leaking so much it has been killing me to drive it, but I found a repair on its radiator and elected to also replace it. Another Cdan box (nice price!!) has the fresh OEM radiator in it.

Thanks for the NAPA tip. I'm heading there tomorrow to get a section for the PHH...

I was 370 miles from home on a Friday with needing the truck for a 9 hour drive on Monday. I realise that if Dan had the part I'm sure that short of driving it to my house it would have arrived on Saturday.

After thinking about this it seems that a FAQ containing sources and correct part numbers for various items that one might need in a pinch would be a great resource. I know of a resent thread talking about high pressure steering hoses and I'm running a TorqueFlow fan coupler that is 2 years old without issues.

FWIW: the Napa guy found a hose at a dealership 30 minutes away and got me his price for it, $9.91 including tax.

On the Gates site there is a lookup tool to get Gates parts numbers for model specific hoses, including Land Cruisers.

Unfortunately, the domestic suppliers catalogs are horribly unreliable for Japanese slow moving part #'s. IE hoses, belts, motor mounts, brake hoses, relays etc. I sold aftermarket parts for almost 20 years. All of the big names in the parts business use information from Gates, Standard, Raybestos and so on. Their catalogs are notoriously incorrect. Wrong info. = wrong parts. I do agree that this kind of database would be useful.
