New short block, and head with the following changes: EGR blocked off, top mount intercooler. The old engine had a cracked #4 cylinder wall.

Everything was tripled checked and probably looked over the timing marks on all the timing gears about ten times over. Timing belt marks all good.

So, with a new battery, I proceeded to prime the injectors with the high pressure lines open to bleed the air out. After several attempts at starting, it sputtered. I waited as I am cautious about not burning out the starter or battery.
It started, quite a bit rough as the video shows.... Any thoughts???

Before my engine blew last year, I did have some hard starting issues even in warm weather. Could this possibly be the notorious SPILL VALVE??

This is a new engine with new hoses and fuel return lines. All I got was an initial rough start for about 5-8 seconds on the video above.

Today, I pulled the spill control valve and it was sticking. I took it apart and cleaned it and applied 12V and it is actuating. Tried starting and no go.

Tomorrow, next check is to see if the spill control valve relay is bad. I will also pull the glow plugs to see if fuel is getting into the cylinder......

Other than that I have:
primed fuel lines to injectors (glow plugs out, cranking engine to run the fuel injector pump with fuel lines cracked open to bleed the air out).
tested for 12V at glow plugs with ignition on

Open to input from anyone here.... Thanks.

94 Prado KJZ78 having start up problems. I just cleaned and unstuck the Spill Control Valve. Fuel hoses and filter replaced, good pressure when I pump up primer. Glow plugs new and getting 12v. I have been using my 1KZ-TE engine manual, going thru no start troubleshooting procedures. I tested the voltage at the pin on the ECU that goes the Spill Control Valve; tested at 3.6V. Looks like I have a bad ECU, agreed? My start up problem???
