I am looking at buying a 93 FJ80 with 218K miles. Today is the first time I have ever looked under a Landcruiser so bear with me please. It has oil where the transmission case begins. Is this a leaking main seal? If so, what might it cost to replace. Also there is a leak on the transmission but looks to come from a plug on upper driver side. The power steering pump appears to have a leak. Both of those huge joints on end of front axle have old grease caked around them - is that normal. It rides good, body solid, engine smooth, tranny smooth no clunking, popping etc. Are the items above huge issues? I am looking at paying $4500.

Thanks and great forum. Glad I found for before and after purchase.

93 = FZJ-80

I will let others fill you in on opinions of rig and the like.

Oh and welcome we like to think it is an awesome forum. :flipoff2:

heh heh, welcome :flipoff2:

you have identified the 3 most common fluid leak issues on an 80. Excellent work. They are no big deal but can help you on the price.

the oil on the inspection plate at the tranny join is either main seal or pan arch. most trucks have it. Unless it is really dripping don't bother fixing it. switching to 40w oil might stop it. Mine recently did to my amazement when I went to 0w40 synthetic.

(edit:) the old grease on the steering knuckle balls might be normal or could indicates you need to repack your birfields (cv joints). more details please but ether way just plan do your birfs to baseline them. Do a search here on "birfield repack" and expect to pay $1000 to a dealer or 14 hours of your life but that is something you would have to do on virtually any 80 over 100k. Test whether they are already damaged by turning full lock left then right and giving it lots of gas (preferably up hill). You will hear a clunkety clunk if either cv joints are damaged. they are spendy to replace, but they will still last for years with the clunk if you repack and you can stand the noise.

the transmission plug leak is a leaky o-ring on your speedo seal. 2 minute fix. 50 cent part

the power steering leak is less common. It might fix itself if you flush the fluid and reposition the hoses (loosen and reposition). Otherwise you will have to fix that. Won't be too much.

Thanks for the response. Went and drove, seller let me take it home, no clunking in front. In fact I am pretty sure he said he had work done on the front axle on the right side for about $1K. He said the mechanic checked the left and said it was fine.

i bought a 93 with crappy green paint and 225k about two years ago. My tranny made noise and the birfs were clicking. I paid $5000. Rebuilt the whole front axle and differential for a tune of $1300 in parts and things have been good since. I'm pushing 260k now. It's always a gamble with a rig with that many miles.

I just bought a 92' 80 with 220,000 miles on the clock. I hut the have not seen much leaking. THe birfields are covered in grease, so I am thinking they will need a repack. but the good news is that there is no racket when I turn.
I just didi a big tune up tho' and it runs great. The interior is fantastic, and the body is great too as well the paint. it has 32x12.5 MT's on it and a 2 inch body lift. I love that truck, (not the gas milage tho')
Paid $2200 for it. Best buy I've ever made. :)

Enjoy
