Hi, I am thinking about building up my 80. I'll start around dec, as I'll be in New Mexico till then. I want to start with a lift, possibly an h55, and a diesel swap. Any help, advice or input is more than welcome. Thank you.......Also this rig only has 90k miles, so drive train will be up for grabs at the appropriate time.

Nice scenery pics....I like the idea of a Deisel in the 91. There are some good writeups in the tech section on several engine swaps.

I love my pal Stone's 12H-T swap into an FJ80... no H55F in his, but it would be possible:

My dad put an Isuzu 4BD1-T/chev auto into a Chev Tahoe, and surprisingly enough, it moves it along just fine. I would be curious to try one of those in an 80 if I wasn't going to stay with a Toy diesel. Parts for them are CHEAP and readily available. Seems quite similar to a 13B-T but makes a little more power.
Again no H55F though.

Can't go wrong with a 1HD-T...

^^^ Define this? We did some highway time with your other brother Glen in Moab, he was whining about how fast USA drivers go. From his comments I got the impression that "it moves it along just fine" in Canada is equal to "would get your ass run over" in the USA!:hillbilly:

This was in SE Utah, were driving is mostly more casual. Unlike Phoenix area, where maintaining highway speed equals "must be able to maintain 80 mph or your a semi portable chicane". Note; those are MILES per hour, not them vastly superior metric thingys you guys use.:D

I have nothing to contribute but curious to know why the '91 is not listed in your signature.

Glenn doesn't like to work his motor too hard, I don't think. Plus he's from the Island - things move a little slower there at the best of times :D
On my way down to Moab I cruised at 75+ mph (or the vastly superior 120 km/h :flipoff2: ) at around 2800 rpm. They'll do it, but mileage definitely takes a hit.

At the end of the day you're still dealing with a 135 hp or so motor with the 4BD1-T, a little less for a stock Toyota 13B-T. A little more boost and a bigger exhaust helps a lot.

I'll commandeer my dad's Tahoe and try to run it up to 80. It's got crazy high highway gears, so it might take 20 or 30 minutes to get there...
While you might not git yer ass runned over, but you might get flipped off a time or 2 :hillbilly:
I'll let you know how it goes.

I define "moves along just fine" as "goes better than my 90 hp BJ70"

Word of advise drop the idea of the diesel swap. It's cool & all, but you spend f'ing boatloads of $ on any engine swap and you won't $-wise make out ahead with fuel savings. Just not worth it.

Now tranny swap? Whole 'nother story. I'm trying to sell most of my cruisers now, but when done will be looking at a H55f into a mildly-lifted FJ80 with a 2F block.

Counterpoint: if you're only thinking in terms of money then hardly anything we do to our vehicles is worth it. After driving my cousin's 62 with a 12H-T swap, I can say it is definitely not all about the money.

I won't disagree on the "f-ing boatloads of $" part.
