Trail: Fordyce

Fordyce trail is arguably tougher than Rubicon. This is my most expensive (trail damage) trail. The goal of this trip is to make it out the upper section through Meadow Lake.

Date: Saturday, 9/19/09

Meeting Time: 7:45 am Leave Time: 8:00 am

Meeting Location: Chevron gas station at Cisco Grove exit on I 80.

Trail Difficulty: Mostly 4

Additional Equipment needed: Extra food, gas, and water. This is an overnight trip so be prepared with your camping gear.

Duration of Run: All day Saturday, most of Sunday.

Tread Lightly / CB Channel 3/146.460 mhz

I think I'm in. I still have a mystery to work out with my rear axle, as well as bleeding the power steering and kludging in a temp switch for the front locker.

I talked to Shawn this afternoon and he is in. If we get a third rig, other than mine, I'd almost rather ride along with someone and take pictures , it would be nice to do a good write up of Fordyce for Toyota Trails. I'll try to make sure my truck is ready anyway.

I am in for sure, however; I just lost my Sunday of wheelin and camping Sat night. Someday....///Friday night I might camp at the first of the trail or stay in truckee for the night either way I will be at the Gas station at the time. Dan you are welcome to ride with me but right now I am seat belt challenged in the passenger side and driver for that matter. I was at pic and pull and picked a "new" set from an Izuzu Trooper. The problem is I need to find a way to mount the shoulder harness. I don't want to drill a hole in the roll bar and I don't have a welder or the welding skill. So I will work on that this week or I just have lap belts.

P.S. I will be in Reno thursday night if you need a second pair of hands. I should be done with my business about 6:00, and could help for a couple of hours. Is Kieth coming in the Blotch mobile or has he started to pirate from it. I think his rig and wheelbase are well suited for Fordyce, maybe better than a forty, even with the few squeezes he would have to negotiate. Oh well, hollar if you need help.

I'm in, I will be camping on Friday, but will need directions to where everyone else will be camping.

NOPE! Not this year un fortunately for me. We have some "gatherings" to attend to this weekend that will prevent me from going.
Aside from that....Im still working a deal to possibly SAVE the Blotch rig from a horrible fate at the crusher that it DOES NOT deserve. With that being the case, I wanna keep her in the condition that she is, so its probably a good thing.
I was having a really HARD TIME of parting the rig out, then scrapping the rest...The guy that was GONNA buy it originally before I came up with the 40 build idea STILL wants it, and were hammering out the details to save her. He really liked the SOA ride that I did and wants to keep in tact.
Ill be looking for a full set of 60 series axles if this goes through, and Im researching the possibility of running a D300 t case behind the 203 in lieu of the 19 spline. Should be a nice set up I think with some NICE deep gear options as well. well see.
Drove by the Cisco Grove exit today...Really WISH I could do it.
Please take a lot of pics. Id love to see more of that trail before I run it in the future.

thanks Mark. I got everything just about done today. I even redid the wheel bearing pre-load since the knuckle re-build.
I did snap one of the hub bolts:mad:
I was going to let it go but then I considered the water crossing, I'll pull it off and put a spare on one night this week.

I'm not sure who will be camping, odds are 50/50 that I will. If so I'll post up here. There is a nice camp near the beginning of the trail, just past the first pucker spot. Mike and I camped there one year.

Mike and his son camped at the campground right at the trail head one time maybe he will post up on how that is.

The better camp is the one shortly past the pucker spot as Dan said.
Don't even think about camping before the turn off to Eagle Lakes, it is way to noisy at night from the I-80 traffic.

Glad you got your rig fixed. I know what you mean about the water crossing and the hub. I debated if I should replace my front axle seal. Its been leaking but doesn't take on much water. At least at the Deer valley water crossing. I'm for camping at the place you and mike did(past the pucker leaning place). Hopefully the bugs have froze. I can get out of Carson at 5:00 which puts me at the Tes. station about 6:30/6:45; should we meet there or reno or the camping spot. What do you think egil? Thanks for the good map and info Mike. If I remember right, 80 is noisy all night with trucks etc. Keith next year your forty then. Shawn are you up for camping?

 I've done the broken hub bolt extraction a couple of times.:bang:

I don't plan on camping Friday night, so I'll meet up with anyone that shows at Cisco. It sounds like I'll be going in solo though. If it wasn't for prior plans on Friday night, I'd hanging out in camp.

I got everything buttoned up tonight, I installed my spar then fixed the other one. The broken part spun right out, I could have done it on the rig:o. I even had time to fix the small air leak in my ARB compressor.

The jury is still out for me and camping Friday. If I do camp I'll probably be going up earlier in the day. Otherwise I'll caravan up with Shawn.

I get off of work at 330, my significant other is supposed to meet me here in fernley and we should be on the road no later than 4:00. Takes 1/2 hour to get to reno, I imagine another 1/2 hour to get to cisco grove exit, Lets meet at the gas station in cisco grove, I can be there around 5 - 5:30. I will have the radio, and call out if I don't see anyone there. (did I read your message right that you won't be there until around 6:30?) If I read that correctly, I will stop and do the shopping for any last minute goodies for the trail and meet you there then. I can't wait, already have almost everything packed, just need the gas can, water can, and some other misc goodies to take along the way. My girl friend is super excited this is her very first 4x4 trip of this kind.

Ok sounds great. I just changed my last appt. on fri. so I can get out sooner. I will be there, at the station at 6:00ish. I really have to push my f-motor with my gearing and tires up and over Donner so it takes me more than 1/2 to the Cisco grove exit. From there we will head into the pucker camp site. Maybe you'll be there Dan.? Shawn we will see you and maybe Dan on the trail I suspect about 8:30/9:00. I'm stoked and looking forward to this run.

Just throw her in the deep end of the pool why don't ya?

Mark isn't a HAM so the radio might not be any help. I don't know if there are any repeaters that will hit Reno from the Cisco area.

If you don't want to mess with cooking there is a decent Chinese place in front of the Safeway in Truckee. They usually have enough parking that you can keep an eye on your rig while you eat.

Well she has to know what she's getting into if she is going to hit the trails with me, it's only fair if she is going to experience me at my best... She says she's up to it, only time on the trail will tell, she doesn't even mind that I don't have doors, she did insist on a seat belt though. Mark, don't push it hard, knowing that you will be there is comfort enough. Fallon Dan is not going to be able to make this one, 40 is down, and no tires. I'm a bit disappointed but I'm sure we will do it again when he is more prepared. I don't think there are any repeaters up that way either, besides I'm only using a little HT, and it doesn't have much range. Not sure what we are planning for dinner yet, will cross that bridge when we get there.

Realistically, if you leave Fernley by 4 pm, get to Reno by 4:40 pm another 45 minutes to Truckee and if you're lucky another 45 min to Cisco Grove.

But whom am I to say that you shouldn't use that afterbunner!

Have a great time.

The Panda Express in new Truckee.
