Just bought a great bj74 from a user here on MUD and have been viewing tonnes of posts, you guys are great and I am proud to be in the Cruiser and MUD community.

First post I need to get out of the way as I couldn't find much on the 89 fuel tank capacity, only that the 80 stock tank was 90L.

My fuel calculations tell me I should expect somewhere around 700km per tank, I know you can't trust the fuel gauges too much but I am now on E (not with the light on, and the seller told me the bottom of the tank is crazy big) and I am only at about 550 km.

If the fuel gauge is anything like the oil pressure gauge then I am unsure what to expect, can anyone shed some light on this?

Also, are there any links to Factory Service Manuals around? I have an Ausi Manual but it didn't even have anything on the Ebrake, I want something more comprehensive.

Thanks guys!

Ps. I know how much you guys like pictures so I will post some photos of my trip to Keyhole Hot Springs In Pemberton, BC this weekend when I get back.

So if 90l is correct then I am somehow running 6.1km/L (14.3 mpg)

Is it just me or is that terrible!

I do have 33" m-55's on it but it shouldn't affect it that dramatically should it?

everything I have read about this 13bt -h55f setup before I bought it suggested I should expect between 20-25 mpg regular driving.

on your '88, do you notice the last 1/4 tank goes REAL fast and the bottom of the tank goes REAL long?

Also, maybe someone has a numerical figure for how long you have before the tank runs dry when the light comes on? I would like to get at least 600 km out of the tank here.

My lj78 has an 80l tank I think never put more than 77l in it before it topped the fill neck.. not sure if theyd be smaller in a bj...

Edit bj74 is an 85l

I get around 650kms with 4.88s h55f and 35" tires on a 3b with a turbo.

Well 12/14 litre per 100km is more like it . You calibrate your sender in the tank . If you go up pemberton its says about fuel mileage ... It is up. That is no 100 km /hr on a nice mid american higway stretch with the wind pushing !! Lol.
Drive your heavy brick and calculate your numbers from the amount of litrea you put in at the tank. And don t forget to change you tire ratio that is huge 10 15% if i recall. Too bad nobody made a modified pitch plastic speedometer gear ... Most people runs 33" I would buy one maybe someone makes it ?!

. Btw. My bj 74 1989 is a 90 litre tank. But i have no light for the low fuel that is for sure i don t know where you see yours?

Maurice, I get around 12l/100km up and down the sea to sky highway. Your 33's would probably indicate a bit less distance for the same fuel used than my 32's. I think the most I've ever put in is around 75l, and I've never seen a light come on. One day I'll get brave and push it a bit further (with a spare fuel can!)

Enjoy Pebble Creek - good weekend to go.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate it!

I have never seen the empty tank light come on but the seller had told me that there is one and it takes forever for it to come on, not exactly the specific time frame I was looking for but it seems to hang around the bottom bar of the fuel tank for about 25 km so far.

My plan was to fill it to the top and calculate how many liters it was off from the tank capacity and it would tell me how much I had / could go when it was on empty. I will post that number later.

Most I ever got into my 73 series was about 87 litres and that was a squeeze. Low fuel light was fitted to post 90 models ,Ive never seen it on the earlier ones.

Or, you could run your tank low taking note of the needle position. have some spare fuel on hand and pull the plug on the tank and drain th remainder.
I did this one day, and when the needle was just a hair below the E line. I ended up with less than 1L in a bucket. So I wouldnt push it too far unless you really enjoy operating the priming pump and cracking injectors...

I'm getting 18-21mpg. All depends how hard I drive it. Sarasota traffic is very aggressive and I have to keep telling myself I'm not in my pickup anymore and back off. That being said I have a 10-12% increase with the 32" tires. My tank is 90l and I'm at 500km which means I'm 550km. I should still have another 100-200 km but not going to push it and fill up soon just to see. My gauge doesn't work past 150km so I can't tell you about that and I have no light.

Well my driving routes haven't been all that enduring I don't feel, just from Port Moody to Vancouver mostly, and then return trip from Squamish once, but one thing is for sure is that my consumption is WAY more than it should be. But perhaps with stop and go traffic some days and 550 km on the gauge it could all add up. I will keep my eye on it for the next fill up and see if it does any better.

Thanks guys for your help.

My bj74 with h55f, & 32" on average is getting 10,11L 100klm, last top up was 71 litres with 638klm on clock, that's without adding the rubber speedo ratio, I normally add 4 % to be conservative.
Fuel gauge is a shocker , so the 90 litre confirmation will come in handy, Indicating I have another 19 litres on empty,

Ran my 74 with gauge needle about 1mm or so below low red mark. 73 litres filled it to the neck with 525 kms on speedo clock. I run 33" Mud KM2s. I think I'm getting about 23mpg on short trips.

What a nice figure around 12L/100km.how i wish my stock RJ77(22R) with 31" could fetch around that figure..Mine probably around 18-20L/100km
My RJ77 also has 90L tank capacity..at 70L(where needle at E) i only could get around 400km(city) around 450-500km(highway)..

So I filled up this weekend and put 71L in the tank and the needle was nearly at E. I had put in 25 bucks the night before so I could fill up on my drive north as its cheaper. so I think I likely have about 10 L in the reserve tank when my needle hits E on the gauge.

Not a bad reserve, and I will test it when I have a Jerry can handy.

I had done about 430K this trip and only used just more than a half tank so far so perhaps it was all the suburb driving that was eating my fuel. I didn't think the difference would be that dramatic, but I will be refining my city driving methods for sure. If you see grandpa driving a nice bj74, that's me.

A couple photos of the trip, perhaps you will recognize the rig.

Yep. I found the same on long trips mileage is up to 26 to 27mpg. With 33" tyre's should I increase the total kilometers per tank on the clock by 10% to 15%,allowing for larger tyre. So 525km on clock is really 575km travelled per full tank of diesel ?
