As if I don't already have enough to fix already, I told my younger brother who's in the Army that I'll fix up his 85 4Runner while he's in Iraq. He is stationed at Fort Riley, Ks with the 1st Infantry Division. Well this was before I actual saw it in person, lets just all make a note NOT to buy a vehicle from Ks or any area that gets heavy snow.
My brother Jeremy,

This is his 85 4Runner that he got off of craigslist for $2500 with over 330k miles!

It actual runs very good for having over 330k miles on it. He drove it from Ks to SC and was getting over 20mpg. It doesn't look like it's in bad shape from the pictures either but it's what you can't see is where the problem is. It's got the cancer very bad, as first we thought it was just the normal Toyota rust on the rear half. So we pulled the factory rubber flooring up and uncovered major rusted out holes in both the drivers and pass floor pans. The drivers floor pan has a hole so big you can use your foot for added braking power and it's rusted all the way around the body mount. The passenger side floor pan is almost as bad as the drivers but the rust isn't all the way around the body mount, the hole is big enough stick your fist through. Both rocker panels are rusted out with large holes, the slightest touch just makes the paint push through. The rear 1/4's are rusted very bad too, there isn't anything left of the factory pinch welds. With the interior panels in the cargo (bed) area pulled off you can see day light all the way down both sides. There is large rust out holes in corners of both wheel humps, we had a rock kick up off the road and hit my brother in the back of the head. Two of the rear body mounts are rusted out. Needless to see the body isn't worth saving. We had to change out a U joint and while I was under the 4Runner I looked the frame over and it's actual in good shape compared to the body. I'll take some pics of the rust later..

At first my plan was to find a 1st gen 4Runner body that wasn't rusted out and swap the bodies. I've actual found few but just couldn't get the deal to work out. But I now have a 88 4Runner with a rust free body/frame locked on for $300. The guy that has it was restoring it so it's had the frame redone, has fiberglass front fenders, downey off road 26mm torsion bars, downey steering rods, and all new brake lines/brakes. The body is primed and has been fully dynamated inside (guy says there $1500 of dynamat), could be plus I guess. On a down side there's 3" body lift, could be another plus but I've never liked body lifts. There isn't a engine or trans but it was a 22re 4 cylinder, which are cheap and easy to find. The guy also has some rock sliders, a ARB bumper, and has a brother in law with wrecked 93 chevy pickup with a "3000 miles on rebuild" 4.3L. The 4.3L would be a great engine but I'm going to let my brother pick the power plant. I actual have a set motor mounts to put the 4.3L in a 4cylinder Toyota truck and I hope already have my 4.3 swapped into my 4Runner before I get that point on his.

What I'm thinking about doing is swapping in a engine of my brother's choice and keeping it IFS but going to a Long Travel kit from Home Page . This kit actual cheaper then a SAS and gives 12" of wheel travel and around 3" to 4" of lift. The rear lift will more then likely be a Deaver Spring mini pack which is what Blazeland uses to match their long travel, if I don't go them some good old 63" Chevy truck springs will great. As for tires I think 35's will be perfect with 4.88 gear depending on what engine we go with, if he wants the 22re 5.29 gears. This will be a daily driver for him and needs to be reliable. He doesn't want a show truck and as you see he does like to wheel. I think have it painted here on base but colors are limited to white, aircraft gray, or dark aircraft gray. For bumpers they will tube bumpers front (if I can't get the ARB) and rear. The rock sliders will be coming with the 88 4Runner so the rocker protection is covered.

I'll be picking up the 88 4Runner next Fri and I hope to work deal for the ARB bumper and rock sliders. I haven't seen pictures of it yet but the guy is suppose to be sending them this weekend. I will post up pics of everything when I get the 4Runner. This will be a long project since he'll be gone over a year but I would like to at least have it drivable by Sept, when he comes home for R&R.

I always watch the "Overhaulin" show and think how there should be a show like that for 4wd's. Maybe one day someone will start it up. I'm going to post this up on pirate and a few other forums with hopes of getting so good deals or help with the build. I'm more then willing to haul the 4Runner to where ever for help if I have to. I already emailed the guy that owns Blazeland Long Travel about a military discount and will be trying to get touch with Deaver Spring about their "Mini Pack".

Thanks

Steven

I've got a 94 with a 4.3 mated up to a 5 speed that may be good for a transplant... I could give you a good deal on it!:)

Why are you selling? Which trans and t-case are you running?

PM me

Steven

SAC it, itll be worth it in the end...

A SAS would the best route for a hardcore wheeler but this will a daily drive/wheeler. I will give my brother the choice of Long Travel or SAS, they'll both cost about the same.

I've decided on a drivetrain, thanks to Greenseaman's 94 pickup that's been rolled (twice). The 87 4Runner will be getting the 4.3L vortec that's mated to the V6 Toyota R150 5spd and I'm going to look for a gear driven transfercase with 4.7 gears. This will work with the V6 R150 since I will not need my Inchworm V6 to geardriven t-case adapter. If we go the Long Travel route it'll have 4.88's and will be locked Front/Rear, if SAS I think it'll still be 4.88's. The 87 4Runner that'm getting comes with a set of rock sliders and the 94 pickup I'm getting from Greenseaman has a Alpro bumper, so protection is covered. Before I start putting the engine in I'm going to have it painted, a color hasn't been decided yet.

These are the pictures that the owner of the 87 4Runner sent me. I'll take some more this weekend, I'm going to sanded the surface rust and prime it first thing. Not sure I like the style of the rock sliders but I'll have to see them in person.

The r150f is a chain driven transfer case in the 94. I think you may still need the adapter... give me a call tomorrow morning so I can have enough time to go by my brother's in Loris and get the battery out of the 4runner so that we can try to crank the 94. Talk to ya later!

SAC is not hardcore. Unless you dont wrench or fab daily.
Its all in how much ur willin to deal with. Ive know lots of racers that daily drove their race cars to keep them fresh. Roll cage, gutted interior, and minimal exhaust wit turbo.

I konw th r150 is for chain driven cases and since I will not be needed the inchworm V6 (r150 to gear case) adapter that I had in my 4Runner, I'm going to use it on my brother's 4Runner.

I got the 4Runner last night and it was an adventure. The guy knew I was coming for over a week and didn't have anything together. The 4Runner also turned out to be a 86 going off the title. The interior is stripped down to nothing, not even a steering wheel or dash. There is butt load of dynamatting in it and the frame is clean but he said that he had coating on the frame, well that turns out to be just some flat black spray paint. The brake booster/master cylinder wasn't even hooked up. The 4Runner was sitting in his buddies yard on a gravel pad that was on the side of steep hill. Had to back my truck/trailer do some old ladies drive way and winched the 4Runner onto the trailer. Did I mention that he and his two buddies that were there to help were all drunk and too busy drinking to help load it. So I had to put my little winch on my trailer to a major work out, as I winched it I turn the front tires by grabing the tire. I also had to make sure the drunk guys weren't standing behind the 4Runner during this. Then I had to lot up all the crap that he had for the 4Runner's interior, which wasn't organized. So now I this huge puzzle of parts to figure out.

I drove my SAS'd 4Runner everyday for along time and really enjoyed it. But like I said this isn't gone to be my 4Runner and I'm leaving those choices up to my brother. I also know that a SAS isn't that hard, since I help with mine.

Another day or driving and hauling Toyota's across SC. We picked up Scott's (Greenseaman) old 94 pickup today and enjoyed meeting him and his mom/pop. The truck was actual in better condition then I was expecting but it wouldn't start. I'm thinking it's the starter, well actual I'm hoping it's just the starter. I'll post up some pics later.

Here's a few pics that I took of the 94 pickup and the 4Runner. This build will move along slowly due to me living 2 hours away. So I will only be able to work on it during the weekends that I'm free to come back home.

From here I'm going to start by sorting out the huge pile of parts that are for the 4Runner. Which is mostly interior stuff, I think I'm going to have to find a another dash because the guy that owned the 4Runner was trying to cover the dash with some gray tweed to match the seats. After I get all the parts sorted I'll some what know what else I'll need to find to put the 4Runner back together. Then I'm going to get the brakes working, for some reason he removed the master cylinder and booster. I also need to find a steering wheel, he had a GT steering wheel but couldn't find the hub for it. Then I'm going to prep the 4Runner's body and have it primed. My mom is friends with a guy that does body work, so I'm hopping he'll paint it for me. It's completely stripped down so now is the best time to have it painted. I also need to find a windsheild and door glass. I could always remove the glass from my brothers rusted out 85 but I would rather not take anything off of it. Before I start pulling the engine out of the pickup I'm going to replace the starter and hope to get it running good enough to drive around the yard. I have a stock 4.10 3rd member that I'll put in the rear axle housing, if needed.

Today I cleaned out and sorted out the parts that came with the 4Runner. I found the door glass and about 90% of the interior, there is also another dash that has been covered in tweed. Took a few pics of the interior and all that dynamating. That stuff is every where, it also makes the body sound as if it's covered in bondo or fiberglass. There is some type aftermarket power window and door locks on the doors but I will have to figure out some switches.

Small world. I bought the ARB from him the night before you were to come get the 4runner.

I wished all that dynamat could have been removed as there is probably as much of it $ wise in that truck as what you paid for it. (I asked if he had anymore and he said no. Your right about his buddies being wasted. They were tanked when I showed up to pickup that bumper, he told me he had other items, but could not get them b/c it was his drinking night.

Congrats looks like a good build!

What actual make this crazy, is that I was in Due West last night. I picked up a 89 4Runner for myself to keep or flip (sell), I haven't decided what I'm going to do with it. The only other thing that I had was the "rock crusher bars" as he called them. I wasn't sure about getting them but when I held them up the 4Runner they have this little hoop that goes up alittle higher then th erest of the bar, well that helps with the 3" body lift.

Like you said it's a small world, Due West was a great looking area. Wish I could be stationed somewhere more like that, instead I get a island with marshes all around me. To top it off I have a 4Runner that's set up for rock crawling.

Bring it up to GSMTR in June, there's plenty of rocks there!!!

I would love to bring it up there but the only problem is there isn't a engine/trans in it right now. That's another project that I have but I would rather get my brother's 4Runner done first. I'm going to try and work on both his and mine bit time isn't something that I have a lot of.

I'm going to be working on getting the 94 pickup started, I hope the 4.3 is in good running condition. I also have a friend of my mom's who does body work coming by this weekend to look at the 4Runner. He's going to paint it for me but he wants to see the condition of it. The last time I talked to my brother we talked about what color he'd like and we decided to go with a gray. I'm going to think cheap with the paint because the 4Runner will be used offroad, so a trip to tractor supply and I found the color I want. It's going to be Massey Ferguson Gray and the removeble top will be a standard black. I hold a friend back in Fl that painted his 4Runner with tractor paint and it came out very good, it actual held up good and didn't sratch easy.

I'll take some pics tomorrow and report back with some good news I hope.

I didn't take any pictures today but I did get the 94 pickup started. The 4.3 sounds really good with the flowmaster. I drove around the yard and down the road, I even did a little burn out. The power of the 4.3 compared to the 3.0 is cool. I can't wait till I get my 91 4Runner on the road again with the 96 4.3 that I have for it.

I didn't have to change the starter, I'm not sure what the problem was last weekend when I first tried to start it. All I did was turn the key a few times after hooking up the battery, then I started to crank over. It still didn't start, I found out that it had blown fuse for the fuel pump. After I changed the fuse it start right up. I let it idle for a little while and did a sea foam treatment, by sucking up a 1/4 can through the vac line on the brake booster and poured the rest of the can in the gas tank. It start pouring white smoke which is normal and I let it idle for a few minutes till the smoking died down. Then I drove it around the yard some more and started to smell gas. I get out and looked under the truck and I found that I fuel line had a crack in it. It's the hard metal fuel tube but I don't really care since I'll be removing the engine and putting it in the 4Runner. So today was a good day and I got everything done that I wanted to.

I can't start on the 4Runner untill it's painted. My mom's friend never came by to look at today, so maybe he'll come by tomorrow. After I get it painted I'll be begin putting the interior back together, I will be also remove all the wiring that I will not need. I will be using most of the wiring from the 94 pickup with the 4.3 and Howell harness. I think I'm going to do a custom gauge cluster and wiring them up myself, but that hasn't been decided yet.

I also got to talk to my Brother today, he's in Kuwait and will be leaving for Iraq in a few days. We talked about the plans for the 4Runner and how he wanted it. I think I'll be doing a SAS on it and not the IFS long travel. I still think that a 35" tire would be the best choice since this will his daily driver.

My mom's friend came on Sun to look at the 4Runner before I left for Beaufort. He said that the body was in good shape, which I already knew. He said that he would do a full paint job on it for a price that he made me swear not a repeat to anyone. He didn't like the idea of using tractor paint but he said he could get any color I wanted. So I ran this by my brother today when he called and he no longer wants a dark gray 4Runner. I don't care for his color choice of Speedway Blue and I knew he going to pick it, he actual told me before he left that wanted a Speedway Blue Tacoma. It reminds me of Smurf blue but it's not going to be my 4Runner. He wants to have 4Runner body Speedway blue and the top will be black, I would like a get a Can-Back soft top but they cost more then I want to spend. I will be taking to get painted in a few weeks and I'll also start putting some of the dash back in. After it's painted I'm going to have a windshield put in too, that's way I'm going to put some the dash in since it's easier to get to. I don't want to get too much of the dash in because I will have to start the wiring for the 4.3L, which should easy since the 94 pickup has a Howell's harness. I'm going to order the grant steering wheel adapter so I can use the grant steering wheel that came with it. I also need to figure out what do about the after powerwindow/locks that the drunk guy installed. All they need is to be wired up to a relay and switches. I could stand to look at that super low hanging rear hitch, so I removed it while I was waiting for my mom's friend.

This is speedway blue on a hotrod and a taco,
