I have an 87 Toyota 22re pickup, it's an xtra vehicle n sits alot. I drove it the other day parked for like an hour now it just cranks over and won't start.

I'm pretty sure it's a fuel prob. I have spark and it runs if I pour fuel in through the intake.
When the key is in the run position the fuel pump doesnt come on, so I replaced that thinking it was the fuel pump, Nope.
I figured out that if the key is in the crank position the fuel pump will come on. I also figured out if the Mass Air Flow opens alittle it will come on, so I replaced that thinking it was the MAF, Nope.

I have fuel pumping all the way up too the fuel rail. So I'm guessing its something with the injectors.
I also put a different ECU hoping it would start and it didn't. I don't think the Computer was the exact same but figured since it was a three prong I'd try it. It didn't start.

Any ideas? I'm out of them. Isn't the fuel pump supposed to run when the key is in the run position? I can't find the port to hookup a diagnostic too it. What would cause my injectors not to let fuel pass? I also replaced the fuel relay and checked all the fuzes there all good.

First, you may need to the original computer back in. Who knows how different the two computers are.

Check the fuses in the engine compartment. A couple of them are mandatory for the engine to run.

I would look in the FAQ thread for the FSM links and find one for your vehicle.

No, you are thinking of the Bosch system on European cars. The AISIN system that Toyota uses only turns the fuel pump on under 2 conditions: a) you are cranking the engine, and b) there is air flowing thru the airbox and MAF sensor.

I can't find the port to hookup a diagnostic too it.

I think you are looking for an ODB-II port, which didn't come out till '95-96 (depending on the vehicle). There is a Diagnostic connector, it is behind the battery, clipped to the fuse block, but it is a proprietary connector, not OBD-I or II.

Easy way to test the fuel pump: take a paper-clip, bend it into a U, then plug it into the +B and Fp contacts on the Diagnostic connector. Then, turn the key to ON. You should hear fuel hissing thru the fuel rail on the engine. If not, you have either a wiring problem or the fuel pump is dead.

There is a ground in the engine harness that can go bad and keep the injectors from firing.

I checked all the fuzes inside the engine compartment also and swapped them out with a running toyotas so I know it's not a fuze.

I can't find that diagnostic connector behind the battery is what I meant to say.

I know the fuel pump is good it has a brand new one and when I open the MAF when the key is in the on position I can hear the fuel pump running.

I'm going to look for that ground wire for the injectors I'm thinking that might be it. Since iv tried just about everything else. Any ideas where that ground is??

Thanks for your guys input hopefully I can get it running.

The diagnostic plug is on the drivers side by the ignitor on an 87, the box by the fuse panel started in 88. Pull your codes and let's go from there.

Maybe on YOUR '87 it is, but on mine it is part of the engine harness, the thick bundle that goes from the engine to the ECU under the dash. The Diagnostic port hangs off this harness, it clips to the fusebox behind the battery, on the passenger side.

I'd take a photo, but all my wiring is in a big box right now. I did pull that harness out just to check though.

The little round fuel pump port on the driver's side was only in '85. In '86 they put the Diagnostic port on.

Yes, that's the next step. But I want to check to see if he can get the fuel pump to at least run by bypassing it first.

mine is an 86 and it was my understanding that 86/87 had just the single plug on the driverside but you say your 87 has the box so I either was misinformed or misunderstood, either way I thought he said the pump ran when triping the AFM.
haveing the codes would be the place to start jm2c.

Just scanned the post, so if I missed something I'm sorry...

Are you in Nashville? Red 4Runner? Guy (me) called you today and talked your ear off for 45 minutes?

...Hint: Location in your "user CP" really helps a lot...

Going strictly by manufacturer date can get you in trouble sometimes...

It seems I've bought every hack there is in TN, and you just don't know if someone else's truck is a hack, or the one you bought is a hack and you're basing your info on that...

Hell, my "85" RTE IFS is proof of that... :bang:

A Chiltons or FSM will show you both...
