’87 Toyota Landcruiser FJ-60. 270,000 miles. (motor rebuilt at 190,000). Daily driver for past 9 years. What’s good: Motor and drive train are really strong. (Pod mounted) vacuum gauge indicates 19” Hg; rock steady at idle. Burns no oil. Starts every day even when well below zero. Carb re-built by “Jim C” at 190,000. Clutch, rear main seal and pinion seals on drive shaft replaced 2 years ago. 4WD works with no problems. A/C system completely replaced with 134a system at 190,000 no problems. Air rail replaced at 190,000. Radiator replaced at 190,000 – no leaks but takes long time to get to operating temperature (t-stat?) Exhaust all tight but rusty. Cat convertor newer. Steering gear replaced at 190,000 – little play. Tie rods, bushings and steering components replaced around every three years – no problems. Leaf springs all original with add-a-leaf on rear springs. Newer NAPA gas shocks. Newer, longer, greasable shackles. Brakes rebuilt and replaced numerous times, including parking brake – no problems. Electrical system and all electrical components works fine (but have had to track down bad grounds and broken wires over the years). All glass good; windshield is newer. Interior in very good shape. Carpet and headliner intact. Fixed rust and painted the body a few times (with Sherwin Williams red oil based enamel) See Pic.. Fixed rust holes with metal and fiberglass. It looks good from 25 feet and at 25 mph – but you won’t be entering it in a car show!
What’s not so good: frame is getting bad; particularly rear cross member. Sheet metal under rear quarters and around back door is swiss-cheesy. That red-neck paint job I told you about earlier may freak out you cruiser-purists. Windows crank hard and sometimes get stuck (regulators are original.) Seats (except for the genuine sheepskin covers) suck. Small oil leak around oil pan (gasket) -leaks 1 quart every 5K miles or so. Oh yeah – the horn stopped working the other day.
Comes with extra set of original rims (chrome in bad shape), roof rack carrier, all factory and after-market service manuals, and a couple boxes of spare parts I never threw away.
Clear title.
It’s time to pass this along to the next enthusiast. I need something a little more sound to pull my boat and frankly, I have other hobbies now besides crawling under this truck! Probably a good candidate for motor and tranny swap or spare parts. $1,000.
