866's with stock shocks?

Have noticed that the 866's are making noises as the weight shifts around corners and over speed bumps. I have stock shocks and am wondering if that has anything to do with the coils maybe unseeding themselves? I have a Slee rear + tire swing out. Is it possible that the shocks are too small and causing this behavior?

Any ideas?

I was getting the same sounds on 866's with OME shocks. I switched to longer Rad-Flo's, but I can still get the sounds when I hit a good bump and unload the rear.

Craig,
I had noise from those springs when they were on my truck with the ome shocks. I only heard it when I went over speed bumps. Never had any noise offroad or going around corners and it only occurred when the truck was unloaded.

It was as if the springs were coming unseated as the truck lifted up from hitting the speed bump and then clanked as it re-seated when it came back down. Mechanic put some thick tar backed tape between the bottom of the spring and the lower spring perch. The noise stopped. There may have been some of it still stuck to the springs when you picked them up.

The fact that you experience any noise driving around a corner is very odd. Never had that. Definitely follow up on Jonathan's suggestion to check the upper spring mount. Bluecruiser was having similar noises comming from his rear springs. Check with him to see if he resolved it.

Then again it's probably the shocks. Better get those ASAP. You know you want them :)

Thanks Richard. I noticed the sound after my truck when in for an oil change. They put it up on a lift, so both rear wheels were at full flex which probably caused a coil to come unseated.

2'' Radflo's will fix it! Lol that is my excuse to the wife as she was the one who noticed the sounds!

I lifted the rear passenger wheel up off the ground so the rear coil was at full droop. I then noticed the bottom of the coil was no longer in its perch. I could see where the coil was rubbing against the perch due to exposed silver medal. I grabbed the coil and rotated it clockwise and it twisted a little. I must have twisted it enough to fix the problem because now the coil is silent and it does not move when I gab it.

I wonder if it is normal for the rear spring to be no longer sitting on the perch when the rear wheel is fully articulated?

So it looks like it is fixed until my truck is put back up on a rack again and the rear is fully articulated.

Thanks for the help guys. Radflow's are in my near future....

This is NOT good. The shock is what limits the travel and holds your spring in place. The stock coils are longer when there is no weight on them so they stay put when the shock is extended. The OME coil is shorter without any weight and that is why they have moved and are ready to fall out. NOT GOOD!

So I assume a RadFlow rear shock would fix this? Or is this a weight issue? I have a slee rear bumper which I assumed would be enough weight.

Over the weekend, I had three grown adults (each weigh over 200lbs) in the back of my cruiser. It rode really nice considering all of the extra weight. It's almost as if the coils like having all of that extra weight!

Neither myself or my Dad are familiar with the RadFlow brands. And it's not about weight...it's about the shock's length and travel vs the spring's length both loaded and unloaded.

What you have now is not a "match". OME shocks would match. Not sure what other brands would match.

Guys,

I have ran 866 with the following setup and to this day have not had any seating issues while articulating-

OEM
OME sports
Bilstien HD 4600
OME N74L

If your having the spring unseat and "fall out" something is wrong. If I can't get them to fall out with L's....your doing it wrong. weld in a spring retainer, drive off the paced road and not worry about your springs falling out.

I still notice the coils rubbing when going over speed bumps with no weight in the back. I installed Radflo's and that did not make any difference.

I am thinking about doing what 3rdCruiser suggested, wrapping some tape around the lower 1st coil. I'm thinking taped used for baseball bat handles would work. Anyone have any better suggestions?

This is an interesting problem...

By the way the 866 is 465mm (RH&LH) height and the stock spring for a 99-02 could be:

486 or 498mm RH
492 or 504mm LH

As stated the shock controls travel and shouldn't be playing a part here unless something is way wrong. Are the springs upside down?

Springs are installed correctly. I just doubled checked. It is only the passenger side that I can grab and move while it is parked

I have same issue. Only since Radflo install. I ran 863 and n74l for years never had the issue loaded or unloaded. All I did was install Radflo and starting have this issue. I hear a springy noise going over small speed bumps, backing out of driveway, even if I turn pretty sharply and fast, I hear the coil move.

I think I have fixed the issue

$5 worth of tennis racket handle wrap from Big Five sporting goods. You can see where it is rubbing in the photo and then how I wrapped the coil.

I drove over a few speed bumps by my house. Silence!

spring retainers are next on my list. I assume you made them yourself?
