Hey Folks, I bought my dream rig last year in a 85 FJ60 that is in great shape. The PO had a fair amount of work done to the truck, including a desmog, Offenhauser intake, Edelbrock carb, and headers installed. I don't think the desmog was done correctly, but I'm not certain. After spending way too many hours staring at the desmog threads here on Mud, I'm closer to understanding, but I was wondering if I could ask the locals for a bit of assistance. It's almost always parked in front of my bike shop ont the corner of Kings Hwy and Stewart in Medford (Monday through Saturday, 10-6)if anyone wanted to stop by, otherwise I'd be happy to go to you, as well. A sixer of your favorite beverage for your expertise? Feel free to pm me or just cal my cell. 541-778-4022.

Thanks
Thom

There was some places that weren't quite right, like the vac advances coming off the dissy. I'm not certain they are done right and all the pics on Mud are of either stock carbs and air covers, or Webbers with stock air covers. Most of them are using the HAC as well and mine doesn't have that. The truck diesels a fair amount after its been warm and I wanted to make certain all the things like the desmog are done right before I start down that path. Mostly, I need a quick primer on some of the pieces, because the diagrams and pics on the desmog threads on Mud are a bit confusing. I want to make certain what I think I'm looking at is really what I am looking at.

I can dig up my notes. Pinging would mean too much advance or running lean. I am not familiar with the Off. carb tho'. I have a vacuum gauge and a good timing light. to see where the carb and timing are at currently. Often someone gets something running decent and then stops there. Have you checked your MPG? Tire size?

Hi Thom.
My guess is the dieseling is caused by carbon buildup on the valves or piston top, to advanced timing will aggravate the problem.
parts of the carbon buildup get hot enough from the previous firing stroke to ignite the mixture prematurely.
Bad cases will cause the engine to diesel backwards on shutdown, which I understand can be harmful if not corrected.
Take your lead from the previous posts and use this for discussion purposes only.

I don't doubt the dieseling is caused be something other than the desmog job. I figured once I got all of the easily fixable stuff taken care of, I'd go down the path of dealing with the dieseling. The truck is running a bit rich. and before I start learning all about the Carter/Edelbrock carbs, I want to make certain nothing I have on the truck is routed or hooked up in a way that would effect it. I mostly just need a hand with some identifying some of the components and making certain I have a good handle on what they do and I was hoping a local could lend a hand. The last time I did any engine work was in high school on old two stroke motorcycles, so I'm not super confident in what I'm doing. Having someone more knowledgeable than me to kind of guide me along would be great
Cheers and thanks for everyone's help so far.

Well, that leaves me out... ;)
I just dug up my notes on the desmog I did and the desmog thread is pretty lengthy but has a lot of good info- a bit overwhelming if you have no clue tho'.
