Picked this truck up a while back and seem to like it quite a bit. 1984 model with a 22RTE. Engine has been refreshed and it runs like a champ. A/C is ice cold, power windows and locks, no leaks, no rattles, android auto....what more could a guy want.
Old tires that were on it were dry rotted, so I tossed some cheap 31s on there to get me by for a bit.

Lets see if I can remember how to post pics on here.

Figured I'd keep this build pretty simple/modest. I want something that I can use, and I want it to drive nice. I want ground clearance/width, but I don't want a lot of suspension and I despise body lifts. Turns out I also hate standing around while waiting for tires to air down/up. 🤷‍♂️
So really there's only one option that makes sense here.

Called up RuffStuff, snagged a pair of their beefy fabricated axle housings. Bought a set of 12k CTIS portals and all the parts to make them work with the axle housings. Whipped up a quick model to figure out dimensions and height. Decided on some real basic 17" steel wheels with lots of offset (will modify those for the CTIS fittings).
Oh, and one bed side on the truck was a little rusty, so I'm gonna do away with that. Threw something together real quick for a bed design. Figure that'll be a little more useful anyway.

Should look something like this soon, though I've still got some details to finish up:

Dang dude! I remember that avatar. Where have you been?!
Hey there! I've been around, just not really on here much. Have built several vehicles since then, but this is the first yota I've owned in a while!

yeah... this is gonna be fun watch!

Spending some time working out the CTIS system. I know I'll need a way to control it, so I'm working on a "dash pod" similar to the Toyota factory inclinometer but using a 8" touchscreen. Will set that up to control the valve block and also monitor a few other things that I have in mind. If anyone has a source for a covering to match the factory brown interior, I'd appreciate it.

Also coming up with a solution to get air from the hub to the wheel. I'll include a guard for the hose before I'm finished.

Can go into some more details on the ruffstuff housings, the 12k CTIS portala(I understand what a "portal" is in general principle), how they mate to axle housings, what gears you'll be running and what the final drive will be?

Do you run toyota 8" 3rds in the ruffstuff housing? Custom 1 off axles shafts?
What track width youre looking for?

More details... lol

The portal axle thing really should've taken over the aftermarket world - suspension, driveline angles... so many upsides. I can't wait to see how this turns out.

The hub-to-wheel airline looks pretty susceptible to damage... Do you have experience with these?

I've owned a couple of different H1s, and never had an issue with the wheel hoses (very similar design), but I am planning to add a shield over the exposed air hose. Again, similar to the OEM shields that came on the H1s (before they went to internal CTIS wheel hoses).

You can see the pic of wheel hoses on my old H1 here:

And this is what the hose shields would look like on the H1:

I think a lot of this stuff will get answered when parts arrive and I post up more pics/details. Should have everything in hand sometime next week.

The axle housings are fabricated to accept 8" third members. Gear reduction at the hub is 1.96:1 and I'm hoping to find some (rare) toyota 3.07 diff gears for the thirds. If not, then 3.58 will be my other option. Portal boxes provide ~4" of lift on their own. I'm setting the track width to match what I've modeled in the renderings posted.

Axle housings with the Cs and portal boxes will look real similar to these:

I like the portal idea. I have a set myself I am gathering parts for to build a new buggy. Not sure I am going to use the CTIS system though. Are you planning on driving your toyota where they will shoot at your tires?
Are you going to run leaf springs ? what sort of steering setup? those boxes turn 45 degrees. Interested to see what you come up with . Are you using spidertrax c's or JHF's ?

Not planning to get shot at. But I suppose it could happen. Lol

I'm still working out the suspension details. If I don't run leaf springs, then it'll be a simple radius arm setup. Steering will be hydro assist. Axle C's are the ones pictured above that use the OEM H1 balljoints.
Lots of challenges around the steering, keeping it low, spinning the diffs backwards (to go forwards), wheel brakes....etc. But if it were easy I guess everyone would do it.

Are the rear portals also on a "C"? Without the ball joint and hard mount I would imagine?

1.96 at the portal almost makes finding a 3.07 or higher mandatory! What size rim/tire do you plan on running? The 22re will appreciate an ultra low final drive, might make 5th useful on an incline... Are other portal finals are available?

This probably isnt the scope of this thread, but I'm thinking about driveshaft and engine speeds. Are portals considered a highway or daily driver item or a dedicated offroad, slow highway, non grocery getter unit?

Rear axle will be non-steering. 3.07 would be pretty ideal for the 37" tires. Unfortunately, that's the lowest numerical gears ever made for the 8". They were only used on some late 80s 2wd 4spd manual trucks. Hard to find used, and they don't make them new.
The 2nd lowest gear is the 3.58 that's made by Nitro Gear.
Surprisingly, this 22rte turbo motor has a good amount of power though. Builds boost at 1200rpm and chugs along.

These boxes are the same used on the hummer h1 and also the military version (hmmwv). No issues on the roads. Just change the fluid every once in a while like anything else.

This past weekend I decided to bite the bullet and install the rear speakers that I've had sitting in my garage for a few weeks. Wasn't really looking forward to it.
I had already replaced the front 4" speakers, and had purchased these 6x9s to match. Just had to cut some holes and make them fit. Also dampened the panels while I was in there and also the rear cab panel. Makes a nice difference. I did the doors a few weeks back already. They close with a nice solid "thud" now.

And I was able to track down a set of wheels that I had been looking for. These were an optional wheel on the ~2010ish Ram 2500s. 17" steel wheel and have a good amount of offset.
Had them dismounted and then bead blasted them in preparation for welding a couple of pieces for the hose guards.

Parts started arriving for the main part of the build. A pair of axle housing from RuffStuff and a pallet full of portals and associated parts. Gonna get everything tore down, cleaned up and bead blasted. Some assembly required.
