This might be "chat", but wanted to share - I've been watching this auction with some interest, as the condition of the rig for sale here is close to my own '85 (under 100k miles, rebuilt 2F, true "survivor", etc.).

While it is somewhat exciting to see a 60 series fetch $37,500, it is also a bit sad as it starts to price these trucks out of the realm of the "average" user, the person who wants to take the truck to the mountains and use it.

Regardless, congrats to the seller - great presentation, wonderful example of a 60 series, and I hope the new owner joins the community and puts some miles on the rig.

BAT Link: 1984 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ60

That is a really, really nice original 60, and desirable color. Low mileage under 100k would be key for someone to garage it forever as an investment vehicle. That said, I am suprised that a classic vehicle investor would pony up $37,500 for it. Seems $7000-to $10,000 high.

Thanks for posting Mr. Rogers. Really appreciate your comments on BaT during the auction too.

Since everything is already out in the open on BaT, keep in mind that BaT also charges buyers a 5% buyers fee.

So the buyer effectively paid $40K for this FJ60.

You guys can either buy me a beer for increasing the value of all your 60s today or, if you are on the other side of the fence and aren't a 60 owner yet, you can throw rotten cabbage at me. Lol.

I'd originally bought this truck to use off road and camping with my sons. But the values have just taken off on 60 series. Just like they did on 40 series (which also made me retire my FJ40 from off road use...and it too will also be up for auction soon).

This was a really rare rust-free, all original sub-100K mile truck. It needed absolutely nothing. Completely refurbished drivetrain too.

The buyer really liked amount of factory original everything on this this truck. He felt it had just the right amount of minor modifications too for his intended use. He plans to drive it, so the rebuilt engine was a huge plus for him. He stated that had I converted to the H55F, it might have even discouraged him. My guess is you'll see him here on the 60 series forum...he also has a LX470 too.

Clearly non-modified and originality equates to the highest resale value.

TIP: 1st Gen 4Runners are on the way up. Get one while they are still cheap. I'm clearing out all my trucks and we just sold our 1st gen T4R last month too. With appreciation realized on the backend after the sale, we restored and my son drove the T4R for free.

Truth be told, $40K barely buys a new Silverdoodoo so $40k for this 60 is a bargain compared to that.:grinpimp:

Agreed.

That's not an outdoor enthusiasts truck. Non pristine 60 series are still available at semi reasonable prices for that purpose.

Congrats to the seller.

Unfortunately, that BaT auction will be a dog whistle for even more flippers to come out of the woodwork.

Welcome to the realities of a great economy! 60 series are hot to more than just the dedicated LC enthusiasts. I get calls from people all of the time that do not own one and are looking to see how much they will need to "invest" to get a truck built to their specs. The automotive industry as a whole is on fire. I'd get accustomed to higher prices until the economy slows down.

I bought a 62 for myself, I'll have a lot into it when it is complete, but I'll have a cool old truck that is totally refurbished that can be daily driven. A lot more fun than any new SUVs out there, at least for me. And that is what it is all about, enjoying the ride :)

True dat. Starting on a 60 like that for me too, very soon. Main parts being bought as we speak.

That is a nice thing about cruisers- either a very fine original example or a well built and well thought out non-original with the right ingredients will gain in value imo.

I think that the 60 market is in it's infancy, so to speak. They are coming into their own. The overall automotive market is starting to sway more toward the Resto-Mod genre. People want old cars that drive and handle like new cars. To that LC market that could be a 60 on an 80 roller with a V8 or a diesel, a 64 Chevy C10 pick up, it's an Art Morrison frame, Mustang II front end, 4 link Ford 9" out back with the V8 of choice. All the convenience you want in your accessory package.

I can remember the first 60 I saw, about 1984, blue. I wanted one, I now have my second. I am a lucky man indeed :)

Agree that 60s are on the rise. In 10 years I might question letting it go at this price. This auction will pull all 60 series values up no doubt.

The FJ Company is turning out fully restored 60 series that start around $60K. And I've seen Jonathan Ward's TLC brand refurbished 60 series with V8s sell on eBay for mid-$40s to $50s (not the full-blown $100K bespoke restorations).

Until just now I didn't realize it, but this truck just set the BaT record. There's only been 2 other trucks with 1/3 the mileage that reached a higher auction price but those were "no sell":

In my opinion, I think it's going to take an extra special "original" lower mileage truck to go north of $40K. Because, at the point you are dropping close to $50K, then why not just go to The FJ Co. and get a nut/bolt restoration in the exterior color of your choice?

I've been into FJs for over 20 years. Back when you could find super nice 60 series and use them for daily drivers. When you could buy a decent running and driving 40 series for $5-$6K. My 40/60/80/100 series trucks were either daily drivers or weekend warriors used to explore the outdoors and make memories with my sons. While also giving me something to tinker with in the garage.

At this point I can't use these trucks for their intended purpose. So it's best they go to someone else.

This was my 3rd 60 series...and the 3rd time was the charm.

I've got the twin to your just sold 60, with 63,000 miles. I always figured it would be in the 30k range considering it is all original except for an exterior respray and the repop tan striped fabric seats from Venezuela. San Diego truck too. I certainly paid close to 30k a year ago for it, but 40k is some serious dough. I'm on the "thank you" side of the fence...maybe I'll get someone to throw me a crazy offer at a gas station someday.

Hey guys, I wrote the BaT listing. I'm a decade-long MUD-member and 20 year Landcruiser owner. The 60 in question was special, all things considered. Original paint, low-mileage, period correct mods, no rust, etc. The seller was meticulous and the sale price reflected this. Interestingly, I sold my tan 84 a couple years ago for 6X what I paid, and now it's worth 15X! The seller and I faced the same issue with values continuing to rise - not being able to use the truck as intended without fear of devaluing our asset.

I also wrote the current 60 that went live today, which opened at 7k with close to 200k miles:

Congrats on the sale @LakeNorman_FJ40 maybe we'll see each other at Overland Expo East - I'll be in my green Hundy![/QUOTE]

Thanks Hanley and Cinco.

Funny, the buyer has a Hundy too. As did I before buying this 60.

Yeah I think meticulous is one way to describe me. Detailed perfectionist is probably another.

Maybe see you Hanley at Overland West...not likely back in NC anytime soon.

But we will connect again on BaT in the coming months to list my 40 for auction.
