I filled up the other day and the crusier was fine went about 3 miles and when I slowed to turn the engine died..I cranked it up but had to use full choke to get it going ..pushed choke knob in and enging died..now the thing will run fine at 3/4 choke but of course it has a very high idle..when I am running down the road and push choke in the cruiser acts like it is staving for fuel and I can feel it almost die and then catch up it never completely dies until I try to stop. No smoke or leaks I have replaced fuel filter and have a new smog pump on it (it seized three days later) I can make it idle now but when there is no choke it fluctuates between approx.300 and 1000 rpm. What can I do?

This is not a daily driver I only use it for a hunting vehicle and for fun around town ...It may get driven twice a week or less sometimes.

sounds like a bad ground on a fuel cut off selenoid or a bad tank of gas...

spray around intake and carb base with carb cleaner and see if there is any change in idle.

I'm with lowtide's suggestions. I am having the same problem. ....Thing is one day it runs fine the next day it dies when I slow down to a stop. I know that something is wrong with my cutoff solenoid because when I disconnect it, it still runs fine. I think I have other probs too though.
I plan to send my carb to Jim C on Friday

I didn't think the fuel cut off solenoid would effect it at speed like you stated, I assume by making it idle you adjusted the mixture screw? If you can fully open the choke and it doesn't effect idle speed, IMHO its sucking in air from a leak somewhere.

nah it will effect it at speed...when my fuel cut solenoid started to have a bad ground i could barly get up to speed...the truck just wanted to keep shutting off...

...run a ground off the neg wire on the solenoid and ground the SOB....

...it will cost ya 5cents worth of wire...

I could no believe that one wire was making my truck run so bad....

Agree with lowtide. My 60 had a erratic idle and stalling problem. Also would loose a little power occasionally. Added extra ground wire to the fuel solenoid and it hasn't had a problem since.

The diagnostics in the Haynes manual are pretty good. Take em one at a time.

same with my idle solenoid. the harness with its wire in it was rubbing along the wheel well under the carb fan. worn almost all the way through. fixed it right up
