80 series owner looking for 60 series

I am going back to my Land Cruiser roots and buying a 60 series within the next couple weeks. My first cruiser was a 60 with a minor lift and a rear power trax locker. That thing used to wheel beautifully, that is untill I rolled  ...... Well, I endied up selling the rolled cruiser for 400.00 bucks with the whole drivetrain still working perfectly( I still kick my own ass everyday for selling it  )..... It was never the same without my 60, I got myself an 80 with lockers and built that thing up to a very capable wheeler (OME, ARB, SLEE, HANNA Quality etc etc...). I love my 80 series which I will never get rid of, but I have always wanted a 60 which I always have wanted to built up. I am looking for a fairly low mileage 60 between 100k-150k, with NO RUST, perfect working condition drivetrain and a clean interior.... I hope htat is not to much to ask for ;) ... Once I buy my 60, I am going to waste a whole lot my money and do the following: H55 5 speed, Fr & Rr ARB's, ARB Bumper, Kaymer rear, ARB rack, 33"s, and reagearing to 4:11's or 4:56's. My question or questions to you guys are, what year should I be looking for? I want a 60 not a 62 ( 2f -4 speed), so I am guessing 80-87? What type of gearing, do these cruisers have, transfer case, differentials/diffs full float axles? What type of lift? SOA SUA? If SOA, where do I get kit to put on? Anything in specific I should be looking for wihthin these 60's? I have seen the moderator's 60 ( MIKE S.) and that is what I want my 60 to look like... Any info would be appreciated, thank you guys in advance....

would you be against a V8'ed 60? mine is for sale in the for sale section.

V8 is obviously more power, but I want to stick with the stock Toyota Engineering, thanks anyway... I love the durability and relability of the 2F engine :)

Would I be able to run 35's with this lift?

I have the exact lift from man-a-fre, except i have HABU leaf springs. You can easily run 35s with it and it looks great. I would suggest getting the U-bolt flip kit with it also, it is worht the money.

what is the u-bolt flip kit, is it used to flip the u-bolts that hold the leaf springs to the axles so they wont get scraped/rash while you are wheelin?

If you are absolutely planning to put in an H55 you need to get a 60 that is made after late 84 (forget the exact date). An h55 will bolt right up to these models but in a pre 84 you have to do some semi complicated fabbing i think.

yea the u-bolt flip kit, flips the u-bolts around the leaf springs

Interesting, see that is the type of stuff I need to know before buying a 60, thanks.....

Robert:

The H55F is a good addition. The pre-mid'84 trucks will require relocating the tranny cross member, some linkage fabbing and changes in the driveshaft.

Standard gearing for the 60 is 3.73. Thirds from a 62 are 4.11 and will bolt up with no mods. 33" tires and 4.11 gears would be about perfect with the H55F.

ARB lockers are a good idea if you are going to wheel it - but I have never needed them.

The later models (mid '84 to late '87) are probably better for your purposes, I think. They all have semi floating rear axles, but a FF can be swapped in, and uses the same thirds as the SF axle. I did this - no problems.

Why not just buy my truck? It's for sale.

Dude I'm so happy to ear that you like to back in roots of Land Cruiser heritage. So just wondering .. your plan are make a 60 series excursion rig . ? I'm also a happy ouner of a 80 series .. and I'm sure is a better excursion rig.

So my thoughts goes in the trair ready rig ( as mine :D ) .. well back to you desire.

SR kit and 2.5" springs are enough to 35" with long rear shackles ( to compensate the 1.5 - 2" lift on front )

So if you plan to go 35" with no got SO with stock springs at much SR kit .. and 4.88 with your H55F.

Mike, your cruiser is awesome. That is what I ultimatly want my cruiser to look like. I just think it would be fun to start from scratch/bone stock 60...I love working on my cruisers and I think it would be a fun project for my father and I. I was dangling at the idea of buying a built 60 like yours for awhile, but I think it would be fun to built one up myself :D ...Hey Mike, I think we have met before....... Did we meet up at Gary's shop earlier this month? (I remember a "Mike" telling me that he wanted to get rid of his 60 that Gary had worked on & also "Mike" was a distributor for the roof top tents.....I saw your sig on mud with the same roof top brand.......If so, I am Robert, we were there picking up my friend's 40 series, you helped us put in the new winch rope.....If it isn't you, I guess i am tripping  ..) I would still love to check your cruiser out though if you have time, since we are pretty close, let me know Mike.....

I am thinking of a 62, maybe...What you guys think? My father is telling me that the fuel injection is far superior than the old carb....and the 62 has lower differential gearing.. I just don't like the fact that it is a automatic... I want a 4/5speed.I don;t know, which ever comes first I guess.....

Robert

That was me at Mudrak's. Nice to meet you.
