It has been brought up in the 80 section that 4x4labs offers their bumper as a DIY kit. I realize that bumper selection can be a personal thing but these bumpers are some of the best out there.

I'm posting to see is anyone else might be interested in getting some kits shipped out here. Typically shipping the whole bumper is very costly as it is freighted on a pallet.

here is a link to the kits. kits

The pics are of old configurations and from my understanding everything he has is available as a kit.

I got pricing on the DIY kits from Luke a few weeks ago;
$495 for the basic bumper
$895 for single swing out bumper
$995 for double swing out bumper
- all the other things like bike racks and cooler holders were available as a DIY as well.

this was for a single bumper. I'm not sure if multiple purchases would reduce it more. His web site doesn't do his product justice. I should mention that you need to bob your frame to mount this bumper. It provides the best departure angle out there. I saw one a few weeks ago in person and it is damn nice.

i just installed the IPOR bumper or i would be interested... i like the way these tie into the frame...

As I understand it, the new version does *not* have the integrated hitch reciever. Other than that (and the whole framectomy issue) I have been drooling over the kit. And the non-existant welding skills...

foxfab, weren't you making something similar (http://www.foxfab4x4.com/catalog/custom/DSC00046.jpg)?

I'd chime in with my experience/opinion since this is the route I went with another friend.

We ended up buying just the "basic" bumper and then adding two of the spindles "a la carte" for a grand total of $695 a piece. The reasons for why we chose not to go with the swingouts that Luke offers with the kits were:

1) after having been around a bunch of Slee, Hanna and 4x4Labs rear bumpers we just don't like the way the locking mechanisms are oriented on the swingouts. You can notice that the actual lever lock is designed to hold in a particular plane and none of the mounts do that. I've seen at least 3 of these fail while on a trip.

2) Luke uses 2" x 2" tubing for the swingout arm mounted to the swingout bearing housing. We wanted to use 2" x 3" with the 3" arranged vertically for more stability since a 37" mud terrain mounted on a steel wheel is really heavy. Add a hi-lift, and anything else back there and you want some seriously stabile swingouts. We also did a very neat 'torque tube" inside of the swingout to pre-load it and it holds the tire rock solid.

3) we are cheap and weren't sure of anything about the swingouts other than we wanted one on each side and would decide about tire placement, accessories, etc as we went along. That's worked out nicely

Not related to the swingouts but we wanted to build up a better side quarter protection hoop too and that made the "basic" model a better platform so we didn't waste anything from Lukes kits.

It is a really nice kit and the "a la carte" build up menu makes it even nicer. It is a lot of work even if you have a good shop and weld.
