Just returned from a week at Boy Scout Summer Camp. Always a blast. Cruiser with 6 scouts plus me and the trailer averaged 8.6 mpg for the 500 mile round trip. Hauling that trailer and a truck full of scouts up and over the Grapevine in SoCal plus the climb into Kernville and Camp Whitsett just sucked up the gas.

Never the less - this truck still never ceases to amaze me as to what it's capable of doing.

Only down side to the trip was when I was exiting an Arby's in Bakersfield, I severed the wiring harness to the trailer when the hitch bottomed out on a dip. Kids noticed the radio blinking in tandum with the turn signal. Thought that was kind of weird, and when I looked, I noticed that the brake controller 'wasn't connected' to the trailer. It has a 'c' on the display when it is. Had to stop for gas outside of town at a cheaper Shell station I know and that's when I noticed the severed wiring harness. Filled up the gas and went to leave and couldn't take the truck out of Park. Took the screw driver out of the tool kit (yes, I still have the original intact Yota tool kit) and poked it down the slot to release the tranny and drove home - without brake lights, turn signals and BRAKES on the trailer. Had another dad follow me the entire way running rear end interference for me. Got home safely w/o any tickets. Continued to have the problem with the shifter not being able to shift from Park.

Fixed the trailer wiring harness Sunday afternoon and while testing noticed that brake lights on the cruiser were out also - Damn. Had already read lots in the AT section of the FSM to no real avail regarding not being able to shift from Park. Figured the lock mechanism solonoid or ECU had fried when I had severed the wiring harness to the trailer. Thinking very expensive fix coming to replace either of these parts to the AT. When I noticed the brake lights on the LC were also out, figured it was a blown fuse to the Stop lights and the trusty Owners Manual also detailed that the stop fuse also controlled the lock mechanism to the transmission. Pulled the fuse - Yep, that's all it was. Damn - no spare 10 amp fuse. Off to buy one, slapped it in and problem fixed. Panic over.

Almost posted this here looking for possible causes after reading the FSM, but got it solved. It's nice to know that this forum was here just in case and knowledge picked up here over the past years helped in the self diagnosis. I had even already looked for any diagnostic codes on the AT and it was clear (E1 and Tt plugs and flashing on the O/D on/off indicator).

This may be more chat than technical, but figured the fuse issue on the lock out to the tranny and mpg makes it technical.

Happy to be back.

BTW - our 30 scouts pulled in a whopping 127 merit badges at camp. Couldn't be more proud of all of them. My son Eric pulled in 7 himself, including his last Eagle required MB. All he's got left is his Eagle project and he'll join the old man in the ranks of Eagle!!! :D

Brentbba,
Congrats to your son.

Regarding mpg, as some here will know, I was down to about 5.5 mpg a few months ago. Since then I've done the following and now am getting ~17+or- a little on highway at steady non-typical-junk speed (around 65-70):
full tune up including going to 1 step cooler plugs
every frickin piece of the EGR system (including the hoses) have been replaced
no more aftermarket roofrack (truck has never had the oem)
new exhaust from manifold back
new carb (LOL - just seeing if you were reading this far :flipoff2: )
replaced every EASY hose in the engine bay and will get to the rest soon

This is with 4.56's, supercharger, 295's, and all the additional weight on the truck.
Measured by GPS.

So it wasn't anything that other's haven't done, but maybe a combined effect. As an FYI, when I first had the blower installed, I was getting 15.5mpg with the same setup (can't remember if I had a rack on or not though).

Junk - Thx on Eric!

I get about that w/o that big trailer and just normal freeway (that's an Interstate to non Californians) driving. I expected shiat mpg with the load I had in the truck plus the trailer, plus the grades we were climbing. I tracked it on purpose just to make myself sick. The mileage is all tax deductible for scouting.

Congratulations to your son Eric, and to you. Helping Boy Scouts only takes 1 hour a week, right?

Right! :D

Congrats to your son! That will be quite an accomplishment.

Just out of curiousity what speeds where you doing going up the grapevine?

Northbound initial grade out of Castaic I was able to maintain about 50mph on steepest grades with a/c off. Start at 70, put foot on the floor and rpms at about 4500 and slowly dropped speed to 50 at about 3800 rpms with foot on the floor the entire time.

Southbound out of Grapevine is a whole different story. Speed got down to about 45mph even with the running 70-75mph start. Had to lift one time and the speed dropped to 35mph and getting back going was tough with the weight I had. Truck weight is 5200 empty and I had a couple hundred pounds of gear, 6 kids at about 100lbs each and me at 200lbs. Trailer w/o all the troop gear, but with gear for all 30 scouts was an add'l 3500-4000 lbs.

I've done the Grapevine without all this weight in the cruiser and have been able to maintain normal SoCal freeway speeds the entire way both directions.

Continually amazed at the performance of our inline 6. Engine temp never budged the entire time either way and I was 'exercising' the engine to it's max for an extended period.

Big Congrats to your son! What a proud poppa you must be.

I'm planing on buying a popup camper next year and was wondering what kind of mileage to expect, Hope it's going to be better than 8 or 9mpg

I like Eagle Scouts...they usually are smart enough to stay in one place when they're lost...makes 'em easy to find... ;)

Thanks H and others.

Very interesting and hopefully true perspective given your line of work and expertise. Even if they only retain a small portion of what they are exposed to while in scouting, they are better people for it. That goes for basic outdoor skills, first aid, cooking, appreciation for the outdoors, leadership skills, etc. etc. etc. The returns are 100 fold as a leader/teacher of these young men.
