I am new to the 70s world but not 4WD or Landcruisers. My first vehicle was a Willys Cj2A at age 16 and yes, I managed to roll it, getting pinned underneath in the process. Fast-forward 40+ years and I am now the new owner of a BJ 73. I am not as stupid as I used to be and do not plan on replicating any of my earlier physics experiments.

My question is rooted in my ignorance about the structural integrity of the 73/74 series - middies with FRP tops. So how well do these rigs do when put on their tops? I know that a number of variables come into play when talking about any collision, but I would like to know how well the built-in metal hoop does in any reported events.

Not planning on wrecking the new rig, but life happens - even on the way to the store on dry pavement. Also, not planning to modify or replace the stock rollbar system, just wondering how well they work.

Thanks!

I guess they dont roll much... I searched the inter web and only found 1 image but no top side picture.

I guess anything is possible if you try hard enough but unlike a Jeep with is prone to rollover when subjected to a 3 knot crosswind, the BJ74 doesn't seem to display those same tendencies. Even with 33" tires, my BJ seems very stable on the road.

I've laid mine over a few times, most times the roof just bent/scraped. Once I hit it on a tree and broke it. Personally I think the FRP top would be useless in a hard roll and I have seen pics where in a sideways roll the factory pressed metal hoop folds sideways.

Which is why I did this

Nice.

Is the rear hoop factory? it sort of has that appearance. MY JDM has nothing in the rear cargo area and no evidence that there ever was anything back there. Not even rear seat belts.

Got it.

Not many of those on this side of the pond I imagine......I'll have to make something.

Do I see a shelf above the windshield?

Any photos of it? I need a place for radio gear.

Thank you sir.

Thank you, just what I was looking for. My Spanish BJ 73 has the same OEM rollover tube, with lateral supports, padded head-bangers, grab bars, etc.

Will likely not reinstall the rear seat, in favor of clear span for hauling dogs, garbage, groceries (not concurrently) so will have the opportunity to upgrade the cage - you have given great start for ideas.

Cheers,

W

They are a little tippy, but the rollover was definitely not the Jeep's fault. I was going sideways on pea gravel at speed when it caught a curb and flipped. My three passengers all bailed and I rode it out, trying to recover control. Foolish young man....

All of this took place in a cemetery (don't ask)
