This might be a newb question and something already answered and I just can't find the answer but I'm changing the fuel filter and oil/filter for the first time since buying my cruiser. Its a 1979 BJ40. When replacing the fuel filter, do I need to prime the fuel lines going to the filter or just fill the filter with diesel? both? I don't want to do anything wrong to hurt the motor. Ive never worked on a vehicle this old so its all new to me.

  1. Fit the filter empty
  2. Crack the bleed nipple on the fuel filter housing
  3. Pump the primer pump (located on top of the injector pump) until you get good streams of fuel out the bleed nipple. You may need to unscrew the pump before it can be pumped.. depends on what's fitted
  4. Close the nipple
  5. Start the engine.
Depending on modifications to your vehicle that have been done over the years and the condition of your primer pump a different process may need to be used. Photos of your engine bay including fuel filter housing, and injection pump would assist further questions.
