It seems my glow plugs run off a starter solenoid. I found the power wire melted today. Does anyone know the resistance reading across a good solenoid?

Resistance? Almost nothing, less than 1 ohm.

Assuming 12V - provision cabling for around 50A on a 4cyl vehicle.

They can be tested with a test lamp - pull the glow plug rail off and connect your test lamp to Batt+, touch the tip to each plug and the test lamp should light up.

Is yours a 12v or 24v?, check your ignition switch plug, if the contacts inside are worn from use, your glow plug relay can stay on and burn out your plugs and wires, it can come on while driving too ans you wont see the glow indicator in daylight, will drain you batteries too, I had that in the past.

Plug out your glow relay on the passenger footwell after you glow for now to be safe until you sort it.

My system has a push button on the dash. It's not tied into the ignition

The plugs show no resistance to ground. Maybe just the solenoid shorted.

It is modified, but on mine, the original glow plug relax arcd itself to the contact also, that could be the problem inside yours.

I imagine this happed to mine with the PO as it was like that when I bought it, but mine was definitely the ignition switch that caused it.
