This is a December '77 FJ55, titled as a '78.
I bought it as a project, drove it for a while, then started working on it. I've had it for a fairly long time, but just ran out of time to work on it a couple of years ago. I'll be moving in the near future, so I'm trying to clean out a bunch of stuff.
Here are the details:
Body:
I'd describe it as "patched up". A previous owner riveted sheet aluminum over some areas and welded in steel in other areas. There's a lot of solid metal, whether patched in or original, but it isn't winning any shows. It's more of a trail body than anything. I have all doors and the original mirrors. The tailgate has a piece of 14ga welded to its face, and has some 14ga patches and reinforcement. I have the glass, but the weatherstripping is not in great shape. There are patches throughout the body. Diamondplate quarters are 3/16". Tranny tunnel raised and modded for the new drivetrain. Needs lots and lots of paint after lots and lots of wirebrushing (or sanding of choice).
Axles/Suspension:
Mostly new bearings and seals.
Rear - FJ60 with discs. 4.11, calipers are El Dorado that don't work very well; I have some Monte Carlo's that will go with the truck. U-bolts were new at install with all new brake lines except the main ones on the frame. No rear driveshaft, but I'll throw one in from my collection.
Front - FJ60, 4.11. New brake lines and u-bolts. Cut and turned 5 degrees, I think. 4x4Labs High Steer. TREs are all GM high-misalignment. Power steering is International Scout. Square driveshaft.
Tires are 37x12.5x15 Sswamper SSRs on 15x10s. Springover with stock springs and new larger center pins. 1/2" shackles with 3/4" bolts and poly bushings. Springs outboarded.
Drivetrain:
2F engine from another 55, unknown mileage but runs fine. SM465 tranny to NP203 range box to Cruiser 4spd transfer case (with 3spd gears). I made a triple stick shifter with heims for this setup that has a fairly short throw. Crossmember is under the 203. The 2F has brackets (by me) for a 80A (or 100A) GM large case alternator, york compressor, PS pump, and Ford large case alternator (for use as a welding setup). I think the PS pump brackets need some finishing off - runs fine but looks a little pukey. York is not included and I might keep the large case ford.
Electrical:
Well...it works and runs, but needs finishing. There was some messiness from a previous owner, then I pulled a bunch of stuff out. Tail lights need to be wired in, front and dash need to be wrapped up. Alternator charges, but needs to be buttoned up a little better. No battery.
Frame:
Had some issues in the rear, so I cut it out and replaced with 2"x4"x3/16" tube. Could use a little cleaning up. The rest of it is solid.
Misc:
-Tank is a 40 gal I built, lined with POR15. 3/16" diamondplate skid (I'm aware that is an oxymoron).
-Comes with 5 swampers with probably 95% tread.
-I have a lot of the parts that came stock with this - the ones that would be useful go with the truck - includes stuff like the rear seat, front and rear heaters, trim pieces, etc.
I've undoubtedly forgotten some details. This 55 is best suited as a trail truck - fun to drive, but it'll take some work to get it road worthy. Located in Pennington, NJ. I'm not home extremely frequently, so if you have requests for pics, give me a few days. If you want to look at it, I can probably be here whenever you want, as long we we schedule a week or so in advance.
$3000 OBO.
