Ok this is making my grey hair a lot worse. Trying to get this thing re-wired with a new EZ- wire harness. I could not seem to locate the igniter on the truck and did some searching on here for a pic and found one. Shows it nicely on top of the coil bracket alonside the ballast resistor. The only problem is this truck never had one since we owned it. I know this because the bracket where it is supposed to be is always where I sat my beer when I was working on it before she blew up ! The truck still had original points stuff in the dizzy and never had any ignition problems...How is this possible ? And more importantly now I have installed a Mels module in the dizzy and now how do I wire it up without an igniter ? Is that even possible ?

my guess is that at some point it had an older 2f with points put in. i used a coil/igniter from an early 80's pick up when i put a newer 2f in my 40. you definitely need the igniter with an electronic ignition.

Here's what I think happened---The 1976 had a vacuum retard dizzy with electronics (igniter). Many in the old days removed the vacuum retard dizzy and igniter in favor of a full mechanical and vacuum advance dizzy (that also had more mechanical advance built into it). This would leave you with a points type dizzy without igniter. I have no idea what a Mels Module is. My guess is that it must be similar to a Pertronix, and it should have included it's own instruction sheet. If not I'd contact Mels??

That sounds about right Downey makes sense...shoot now I need an igniter of some sort. Any suggestions for cheap and availabe easy ?

The Mel's module replaces the ignitor function. It has a power wire and a signal wire to the coil. contact JTO for the instructions.

The 75-77 dissys are points, not electronic. 75- mid '76 are vac retard. All later dissys are vac advance.

Post a pic and we can tell what type it is.

Alas I have no way of posting a pic right now... I do have the instructions for the Mel's kit, just not clear on whether or not it will function without an ignition module of some sort. You saying that it will ?

The mel's module IS the ignition module.

Don't the instructions say to connect it to the 12V+ side of the coil/ballast resistor for power, and connect to the - side of coil for the breaker function?

Son of a gun Jim you are right, thats exactly what it says...Gotta learn to read the stuff on the paper that comes with things...many thanks...

FJ40Jim - Does JustDave45's '76 carb have ported vacuum to run his vac. advance module?

Yes, 1975-later carbs have ported vac that will work with vac advance dissy. The port was originally used to signal the computer and EGR valve, but when desmogged it can be connected direct to a vac advancer.
