Hello, Just wondering if anyone knows why Toyota changed from the large front axle/diff in the Hj75 to the small front axle/diff in the Hzj75. What advantage/disadvantage do they have over each other and why is the diff smaller on the Hzj75. Any answers would be very helpful.

x2 ,Toyota have been scrimping and shaving weight off the 7* series since they begun production. No real problems with the smaller diff under normal circumstances. I think you get a bit more clearance under the smaller diff.

Commonality with the other generations of LCs would probably be the reason. The y upgraded the parts as they changed the generation of the truck. Just like why they no longer run the 3B on the trucks now.

The early gen 70 series trucks were chassis wise same as the 40/60 series, with 1990/1 you get the next Gen of LC with more commonality with the 60/80/Hilux series trucks, and in late 90s, you get more commonality with 80 series along with some 105 series junk.

Just the natural progression of technology and components that the landcruiser has made through the different series, just with the same 7X series body style:meh:

The small center are ok as long as you keep the backlash in the crown and pinion correct. If they get to wide it peels teeth off. the good sides are bigger CVs and better axel seals and better callipers. Unlike a HJ75 frount diff housing if it has got a slight bend or the swivel hubs are missalined they leak oil. The HZJ75 are much better. And if you dont like the small unis on the frount sharft, just fit the drive flanges off a HJ75 on the diff and the frount of the t/case and the HJ75 sharft bolts in with the big unis.
