Hi all,

87 JDM BJ74. OME springs, shocks, greasable shackles/pins, and castor adjuster plates installed last year. I have been getting a clunk from the front end around the tires when turned into bumps, or exiting a parking lot. I raised the vehicle up and wobbled the tires, and I only got play when I placed my hands on the top and bottom of the tire and wobbled back and forth. No play side the side. And not much on the other tire. My axles seals are blown so I am already going to do a knuckle rebuild (X2). But, the play I mentioned would that be worn out TRE's?

Also, after the lift last year I got an alignment and wheel balancing, and the front end still does a semi-violent shutter (felt in the steering wheel and the entire truck) when turning with the road going 80-100km/h. The steering stabilizer is new last year, and it has happened every since I liftted so I am leaning towards the TRE's. Or, my knowledge on TRE's is wrong.

Advice appreciated; I am about to order a knuckle rebuild kit from Cruiser Outfitters and thought I should get a set of TRE's from them too if needed.

Mate on my 78 I had the same thing.

A combination of things repaired mine, but yes the tie rod ends are a good place to start.

The top /bottom of the tyre movement may be just loose bearing and that will be resolved when you do the rebuild

On my troopy there were 4 tie rod ends to replace.

I also at the same time did the seals and bearings like you will and did the kbushes in the arm things that hole the axle to the car. Cant know what they are called at the minute

Also had the tyres rotated and balanced and a wheel allignement done.

Good luck with it

Sounds like TRE but it could be bearings as well, you can do all that when you do the knuckle rebuild.

Was the castor checked accurately after the shims were installed?

I'll order a TRE kit and re-do everything. I'm also looking at one of these to fix the massive play in my steering wheel Relay Rod Rebuild Kit > BJ60 HJ61 HJ60 FJ60 BJ75 BJ74 BJ74 BJ73 BJ71 BJ70 PZJ70 | 4wheel Auto.

As for the castor, I had a shop recommended by 4wheelauto here in Edmonton do to the alignment. I don't know much about it, but it steered straight and the steering wheel was centered. *shrug*

Thanks for the help, I'll order the parts on monday, and as always keep everyone posted.

.

The castor angle is something only a shop set up to do 4wds can do. I ask because I have seen a few owners with the death wobble claim to have their alignment done properly only to find out later the shop didnt do it.
Probably the best thing to do is fit your new parts and see how it is after that.

the wobble: This can be caused by a great many things, but one thing that can have a great effect is to correct an engineering mistake made by Toyota on most early Land Cruisers... the fixed end of the Steering Damper should be attached to the axle, not the frame, and the other end to the drag link or Tie Rod. Any side to side wobble in the suspension bushings or TRE's will be AMPLIFIED by the steering damper when it is attached from frame to steering. Re-mount your damper to attached the fixed end to the axle, and this will reduce the exacting tolerances needed in your bushings, u-bolts, tre's, wheel bearings, etc. Leaf springs are terrible, terrible, horrifically terrible design and should be outlawed.

The clunk: that clunk you hear when turning back and forth is the leaves in the pack slapping back and forth. Leaf springs slide back and forth, because that's how the work, but the also slide side to side, because there's no good way to just make them slide back and forth. That's the clunking you hear. Again, did I mention how terrible leaf springs are as a suspension technology.
