I replaced all the felts in my 72' FJ40 and the issue has been that the window itself is so tight within the felts, that now, my window crank regulators are slipping and won't allow me to roll the windows up anymore. I'm curious if there's something I can coat the felts with so the glass slides more easily or is there another tip to making these more slippery? I'm going to replace the regulators on both sides since I don't think they can be repaired to the point where they're as good as new. Should I get rid of the vertical side window frame felts all together and maybe try something else or a different type / brand? I think what I have were from SOR. Any help would be appreciated.

That's funny, I'm replacing the same in my 74 at the moment. Have you pressed the felt channels all the way into the recesses? Has the door frame been tweaked or bent? I had to tap mine in with a small deadblow hammer.
Is the glass square or rectangular?

Don't know if this will help.Mine is a 1978. I order new runners for my windows and to my surprise I got 2 with a Crome strip around the window frame. They fit my door perfectly. My doors had standard rubber runners

My original post was over a year ago but I only now realized that you asked me if my felts had been pushed into the channels all the way. After opening up this can of worms this past weekend, I can tell you that my new felts have a lip that somewhat hangs over the channel edge if that makes sense. I assumed that the lip would protect the window glass from hitting the metal channel and breaking. I wish I had a picture to share with you but my 40 isn't here with me at the moment. I'll try and post a picture later. I will try to press the felt "all" the way back to the base of the channel and see if that makes any difference. Maybe that's just it. Fingers crossed. If not, I'll apply dry graphite lube to the felts and see how that does. All else fails and I will carefully spread the channel with a piece of hardwood.

I had the same problem with my SOR felts that go all the way around the door frame. It gets better with time, and stretching them apart after intalling with a proper size 'spreader" helped too. Dry clear graphite sounds good as well.
