Guys looking for 1972 FJ40 windshield hinges i can paint, PO previously put a bunch of crome items on the FJ and i want to go back to painted hinges.
Thanks,
Brad

Just an idea- Do you have a chrome shop in your area? They can strip your parts for a nominal price.

I’d second that. Most any auto body or powder coat shop in the area will likely media blast them for a very reasonable price. Then prime & paint whatever color you want.

Guys thank you, i wasn't aware that the chrome could be blasted off. I do have a chrome shop not far from my office, i will stop by and check it out, this would be a great option as the bezel is chrome as well, along with the back door hinges.

It can be, the question is how good was the chrome application? That’s where a good veteran auto body guy will be of help. They may be able to sandblast or reverse the plating process or tell you not to bother and just sand the bonded chrome & paint over it. I’ll be curious as to what their answer is. I’m no expert.

And if all that proves to be cost prohibitive I have a nice original blue pair from a 72 I’d sell for $80 shipped. I can get pictures tomorrow.

Beer M3 i hope to go by tomorrow and find out some more details. I will let you know, i am in the process of compiling the paintable parts that are currently chrome
- hood hinges - got them
-windshield hinges - need them
-back door hinges - need them
-vent doors - got them
-bezel - need it

I am not doing a frame off restore, but plan on repainting it and going with Toyota color not sure which one but prior to that getting all the pieces first because i am not pressed for time.

If i isn't cost prohibitive, i will definitely get the hinges from you.

On another note, i found a guy very close to me that has 5 OEM 5.5 x 15 steelies that are powder coated white that he wants to sale, he is restoring an FJ and had purchased these and since has decided to go with 16's to open tire choices, he was asking $600 for all 5 with no hubcaps but since i am local has dropped to $400.00 Sounds like a great deal and i really like the original look.

Thanks,
Brad

That’s a hell of a deal on those wheels from what I’ve seen. You should jump on that if they’re as advertised. Even if you later strip and paint them the oem gray you’re probably still money ahead. If you like the original tall skinny tire look don’t wait.

I bought a 72 body & frame that came with various parts, but I only need the tub. Do you need back hinges for ambulance doors or just the small lower doors? I’ve got a very nice front bib but I can’t recall if the bezel’s on it.

Stripping is the most through method of removal. Sand blasting will certainly remove loose/flaking chrome, but it will only etch chrome otherwise. You can paint them afterward. I had some rear hatch struts I wanted to paint, it was very easy to drop off and have the chrome removed. I tried to work with them prior to having them stripped and it was a hassle. You may want to trade the bezel, some people love chrome bezels.

BeerM3 just the small doors, but per suggestion earlier i spoke to a chrome shop that can actually remove chrome and get items ready for primer and paint, i am going to take a few items there first. this place has been close by our business for a long time and i spoke to the manager and he said they do all the time, i have a bunch of chrome lol

Another way to save is to clean them your self after stripping. It may be extra for media blasting and acid neutralizing. You can wash them and wire wheel yourself.

Ok. Sorry, I did get a set of those smaller hinges with the tub, but I'm keeping em because mine are long gone. The "unchroming" makes sense because I assume it's very similar to removing zinc plating by simply reversing the polarity in an electrolyte solution.

I am definitely hoping it will work and is cost effective because all the parts are there they are just chrome from the front bumper to the back bump stops....lol.....guess the PO watched a lot of 50's shows with a lot of chrome cars....
