HI all

First time FJ40 owner .Recently acquired a 71 with GM crate 350,3 speed tranny shift on the floor, and vacuum actuated transfer case.
The Xfer case shifter is located under the dash. There's also the FD pull switch on the dash.
I need to know what position the xfer case shifter that's under the dash needs to be in for 2 HI.I need a reference point.
Iv'e searched here and all over the net.The PO said the shift needs to be out(towards the driver) for 2 HI but a LC shop I contacted said the shifter needs to be in(towards firewall) for 2 HI.
What about the FD knob on the dash?
Ive seen the dash plaques and can't figure out whether HI is toward firewall or toward the driver(H N L is vertical on the plaques .
What does the FD knob do?

Thanx

2wd-4wd

I've also got a 71 and had the same questions when I first got it:)

The FD knob engages the 4wd just remember to engage the front hubs (Don't Ask me why I'm telling you...)

As for the hi-lo it is as far down towards the cowl for hi and upwards for lo on mine.

Now we need pix

i've owned my '71 since 1979...FD knob is pulled out for 4 wheel drive(lock hubs first),the light on the dash will light up. pull the handle toward you to engage the LOW range. i do this with the cruiser in nuetral.
