700r4 to dana 300 question

I think I read somewhere that the dana 300 will bolt right to a 700 r4 by elongating one of the holes. And if I change the output shaft when I rebuild my 700r4 to fit the stock input on the dana 300, do I still need an adapter? I ask because I am trying to save some driveshaft length on my 40 and the adapters alone are 5+ inches plus the 23" for the 700r4. Is it feasible to mate the two or am I stuck using an adapter?

I used an AA adapter and it still left me with a 24" drive shaft (pushing the rear axle back 4-5")

Some info here on what Georg did to bolt up his Atlas to a 700r using a stock GM adapter, and im pretty sure that the dana 300 and the atlas use the same bolt battern

Sunray also offers a VERY SHORT adapter for this application, IIRC.
