Sorry, wasn't sure where to put this....as it is kinda tech related. But wanted to get feedback from 70s owners.

So it is my understanding that vehicles over 25 years old dont have to meet emissions and inspections. This is why there are available for import now. I am seriously considering picking up a 70 series now.

Has anyone had trouble with emissions testing?

Has anyone seen the story about the 1985 Land Rover Defender be sized by 6 cars full of DHS agents, possibly due to the "Clean Air Act"? Does anyone know further details on this story?

Thanks for your input.

Don't quote me here but I think it's 25 years for DOT / Customs and 21 years for EPA. There should be plenty of information if you search "importing".

Yes, it turns out that the guy that sold her that Land Rover was taking vehicles that were less than 25 years old and tweaking VIN numbers to make his trucks appear to be older than 25. Somehow the DHS and EPA got wind of it and went and confiscated 40 of the vehicles he sold in the US. I freaked out when I first saw that story, but after learning what happened, I see that we have nothing to worry about. The sad thing is that those people had NO IDEA that guy was doing things illegally.

The outfit that sold me my BJ74, LandCruisersDirect.com, gave me all of the import papers, the DHS/US Customs papers, the shipping documents, and an EPA document that clearly showed my VIN which matches the VIN on my truck.

I figured there was probably more to the story. This makes a little more sense now. I was already looking at LandCruisersDirect.com so thanks for extra info on them. Man that sucks for those people then, hope maybe they can recover their money from him.....but probably doubtful.

Exactly. They got skeee-rewed... I'll tell you though, the fur stood up on the back of my neck when I first saw that story... My BJ74 is now a genetic extension of my being... NO body is jacking that baby from me... heheh...

I thought emission testing is different in each State? Just because the dot allows it to be imported doesn't mean it will be emission exempt in your State.
Vehicles being imported are grandfathered from the federal clean air act after reaching 25 years of age.

I'm not sure any one was debating state emissions requirements in this string, although off hand I wasn't able to find any states in a quick scan of the Internet that didn't adopt the 25 year requirement... Looks like CA is less strict with only an 18 year restriction on diesels with an 8,500 lb restriction of some sort.

Allen,
I'm not quite sure who I was trying to debate on this thread. I was simply stating something I came across while I was doing research on bringing my truck to Florida. It was a very simple reply to options2. I do recall reading that some States have different exemptions from what the federal government allows.

No worries. Reading over it again, I can see the point you were making.

I actually spent last half hour or so trying to find the site where it had a list of every State and their exemptions and emission checks. I found it over a year ago and sadly can't reference/find it. The site could very well have had incorrect information, but this post made me remember it.

Edit. I hate writing on phones. Probably why my first message didn't read the way I meant it.

Any chance this is it?

To reduce emissions in older diesels add about 10% biodiesel. That will cut emissions by about 40%.
Mine tested less than 10ppm HC and zero opacity with 10% BD or VO added.

I run 100% bio-diesel in my HJ75.....
Virtually no harmful emissions and the smell of fried chicken is very pleasing. While I don't know the requirements in other states, I fairly sure metro Atlanta is the only place in Georgia that requires emissions testing.
