Hi All,I am new to the 40 section.I am starting a build up(more like trying to get my 40 running on the cheap for now!) This truck has been sitting for 8-years,orginal F engine sieized up.Been wanting to put a 2f w/a 4-sp. in and use my TC.Going to have to dump the old vac. asist FWD (FD) system, dump the 3-sp.tranny(coulm shift). So I will have a ton of ??'s to ask(I have been reading a ton of FAQ's,books, whatever I can find)Love to do the reasearch!
I am getting the 2f soon, used 175k plus out of a 78.Don't know excatly what it's comming with yet as it's still up in Tahoe. So I will need the 4-sp.tranny soon also(looking for one).Just wanted to get started, what shoud I do 1st. pull the old F/tranny/tc out in one.Do some prep in the engine bay(a bit rusty)I am not looking to do a full resto here. But a little clean up and maybe some paint in there would be nice.
I don't have a problem cutting holes in the floor for the shifters.Just need to read up more on this.I will try and post up some pics. of the rig now and engine bay.
I am comming off selling my built 93 FZJ80 and I am still in shock from selling this truck! So I need something to keep me busy as the 40 is hard to look at now not running.I mostly want to just drive it around town for now.But I know I will want to someday take it on the RUBICON trail. So I will go that route in building it.
Thanks,John Ps I will post up pics.later, going to submit this thread before I scew up and loose it!

If you plan on the rubicon do some drivetrain planning. Before you spend cash on a US 4 speed & transfer look for the aussie unit, it's got about a 1/3 lower first gear, about the same as if you swapped your 4.11's in the axle to 5.40's (which no one makes). You don't necessarily need to dump your transfer
unless it's broken. It has better gearing than the one behind the 4-speed and only requires a different input gear and a bearing and a couple gaskets and seals to mate it behind the 4 speed

Since you have a 69 already, you already have most of the parts you need for a desirable Rubicon swap if you run an SM420 transmission instead of any Toyota 4 speed. It will actually bolt up to your existing bellhousing, and with a simple plate adapter will bolt to your 3 speed transfer case. It has a 7:1 low gear vs a 3.5:1 low gear of a Toyota H42 4 speed or the 5:1 of an H41 4 speed. The SM420 alone will get your gearing to a good place for the trail, and I have seen SM420s go as cheap as $50. Read some of the SM420 threads here.

Seriously, John, it's a good swap if you want to build a trail rig on the cheap, though cheap is relative, as no build up is really cheap.

If you just want a Toyota 4 speed, I have an H42 from a 76 I could sell you, and it would come with a transfercase minus the nose cone. It was working fine when removed, but of course, I would recommend a rebuild while you have it out.

Thanks for the replys.
Lcwizard,I did not have any problems with the old transfer case,so I could use it in my swap.Just have to change the linkage & get a floor shifter?
Andrew,I am intrested in the H42 w/the Tc.Do you have the shifters? This might be a better(easyer)swap to go to the floor shifters.Could P/U on the way up to tahoe to get my 2f.

No shifters-they are in use in my Fj40.

on the cheap?

your first goal is on the cheap you say, then someday the Rubicon

Probably a good way to go cause you can keep building on it a little at a time

I am doing the same swap on my 71. There are a lot of options but cheap and easy first would be just the 2f and 4 speed. For the TC you can use the 3 spd case with a kit to adapt it, put your 3 speed gears in the 4 speed case and even add a PTO winch gear and lengthen the pto shaft

there are tech links on the 4 spd to 3 spd TC

I think I will probably go with the whole 4 speed set up TC and all then get the driveshafts to match to get me up and running

Later I can worry about crawl ratios and the like but my use will be for bad weather, camping, light towing, and easy wheeling not the RUBICON or MOAB so my plan is to go strictly 4 speed stuff and keep the 3 speed case to do a mod later ---that gets me up and running after a year and a half of restoration work.

Down the road I want lockers, pwr steering, disc brakes, better gearing and maybe even AC but that all gives me the excuse to keep working on it and enjoying that process too. Sometimes having stuff to look forward to is the best thing!

Good advice Bsmith, yea I really just want to have it running 1st.then do the big mods later down the road.
My 69 has a 4" lift,shackle rev.,MAF front disc brake conversion,w/the slotted&drilled rotors,33x12.50-15 BFG muds(super good tread left)but they are old.
I also need to get the warn locking hubs.Lots to do to get it running. But I need to figure out if I should just pull out the old motor now& be ready for when I get my replacement 2F/4-sp.tranny.I have been trying to post up some pics. but can't figure it out.The truck is set up pretty good, just washed it up today and took some pics.Anyone want to post a few up for me till I figure out what I am doing wrong.
Thanks,John

pics

email the pics and I'll post them for you if you want.

I wouldn't worry too much about the actual swap of the pieces cause that isn't much work. I dont have a cherry picker and checked the local tool rental and can get one for $30 a day.

Instead I am trying to read up on the details of the swap

-Deciding the transfer case issue
-How will I Desmog it? What can I keep or get rid of?
- do i need the engine/emissions computer from a 2F
- will the electrical connectors reach/same type, are the connections in the same place on the motor?

Mainly I am concerned with the engine running correctly after the DESMOG. I am waiting to hear from JIM C (FJ40JIM) about rebuilding and modding my carb and I think he will recurve the distrib too

I have some answers in my recent posts and there is some info in the tech section but I am sure both of us will be figuring out some stuff on our own when it come time.

I'll be posting up when I do mine. I should hear about the shipping by Mon or Tues and hope to have it within two weeks

on my shopping list or already on hand

pen oil
Engine Mounts
4 speed tranny cover
oil pan seal
rear main seal
exhaust manifold gasket and donut seal
4 speed pto gear
tune up kit for 2F
oil/anti freeze
anti sieze compound
engine high temp paint
TSP and simple green for washing up

Just some things to think about, anything to add to that you think?

B Smith123,good list I have not got that far yet as i really don't know how complete this 2F engine is going to be yet.How much(ballpark)on the parts$$ do you guess? I have some of those items around.
I also have not thought about the desmog, this must be a common thing around here.

If you can Pm me your email address I can send them to you that way.It would be cool to get a few posted up.
Thanks,John
