I have a very clean 64 (titled as a 65) that I am starting to get running and restore...any advice on where I should post my build thread? Here are some pics and a link to my thread on Rising Sun...

Not a bad looking. Was puzzled at first with the hard top. That was until I realize this is a soft top model with a later hard top added. Now I curious if they had to drill holes to mount the hard top side to the tub. Not sure if destin's 64 had the holes or not.

Nice rig. I'd say this would be a good section for your thread.

What are your plans? Back to stock as much as possible, or just to fix and drive?

Yup, came as a soft top, then a later model hard top was put on. Will take some pics of how it was attached, I do remember some odd handles....

Initially I just want to fix and drive....longer term I am not 100%...probably at least visibly stock...but might replace the Chevy motor with an F or 2F...

nope...I am the new owner

Sounds like a good loose plan. Find yourself an F 135...that is what was in there originally. I know many people out west just dump them, and here I have to pay to get one home...go figure :frown: You should be able to find one and keep it at home under a tarp...just keep your eyes open.

If you find a corrugated top for sale, I'd get that also...at least that is what your '65 would have had if is to be a hard top...they were corrugated till mid '65. You are sorta lucky if you want to go back to soft top...there are currently people making bows, and tops to reproduce the original look, and Destin has a great thread going on his '64 soft top restoration.

Post up more pics

I think I saw that 40 that Destin is working on when it was for sale here in Colorado. very cool truck!!

How can I tell an F135? I will search for it...

I do want to go back to a soft top, but think I will find a hard top also...

Did any early 40's have a roll cage? I have 2 young boys and want to be at least reasonably safe when we drive around town or on moderate trails.

Thanks all!

T

Your choice where you want to post the thread. I guess others would call this section "purists" or "restoration" types, I think we are just old school. But the early 40 guys are welcome. Just don't expect us to say disc brakes or power steering will cure all. ;p Rename the thread if you want it to stay or let me know and I can move it for you.

If the motor runs well, I'd focus on other stuff first. Here's a F135:

Ya...don't go out in a rush to get everything now, just keep your eyes open for when ever stuff pops up...it may be a while before you find some of the stuff you'll need/want.

65 restore

I have a 65 titled as a 66. It's a FST and came with a later hard top. Luckily the PO didn't drill any holes to mount it. He drilled about 100 other holes but none for the top. I will be looking for a reproduction soft top someday. Good luck on your build and I hope you keep it here, this is where I look for quality information on keeping it as stock as possible.

After 1963 the two tubs looked the same. The hard top would just fit on the soft top model. The difference was the mounting bolt holes weren't there. I'm curious if there were by 1965. Does your have the vent in the bottom of the windshield frame? If not are the four fixed nuts there to bolt the hard top down?

The fiberglass cap doesn't look like it fits correctly on the windshield. The early windshields I believe are a little wider at the top. Is there any holes across the top of the windshield fot the top?

I will take a bunch of pics this weekend. Lots of funny little quirks with they way it has been "customized" :)

I would say for now keep the chevy engine...it has quite a bit more power...and it runs really well doesn't it :)

If its not broke ...save it for later...when ....or...if it ever goes...then replace it

just get a "toyota" sticker to put over the "chevy" embossing and paint the valve cover black...most guys wouldn't tell the difference....well...almost most cruiser guys....we can tell.

get the electric, interior and other things worked out.

IMO it needs an oem soft top :)

or....as Dean said....a corrugated top :)

BTW....NICE Rigs :)

If you go OEM soft top, be sure to read Johnny's threads...he knows tops :)

So Timm, have you decided on that build thread yet?

Lots of opinions from people who know (myself excluded...I don't seem to know much as I still say to keep an eye open for an original F 135 engine...people are giving them away :crybaby: That doesn't mean you have to change out the Chevy, but at least you'll have one for when you are ready ;))

Have you checked out Dusty66's thread on 9 MM brake lines? Great thread in the 40 section. What ever you do I would make sure the brakes are good to go....and post pics ;)
