anyone done it? I was wonder how hard it would be to swap the dash and gauges out of a 62 and put in all 60 series gauges and dash. I would think most of the stuff would bolt up but I think the wiring might be a problem. any ideas???

hey let me know if the 62 dash is good I might be interested in it when you get done with it....

I have sort of done this by installing FJ62 wiring into a FJ60. It's rather straightforward with no big surprises, the wiring is plug and play. You will have to find a new spot for the "Check Engine" light, I used the uneeded "Choke" light spot.

i haven't done this or i probably don't even know what im talking about but shouldn't the 62 dash just swap into the 60 and vice versa? Brackets should be the same and everything, i would think.

yeah but the wiring is different...like where all the stuff plugs into the gauges...

So you also switched the wiring? hmm..I dont know if this will work because it would be a 62 wiring with a 60 dash and gauges..

I'm thinking this is not the case. When I got my '84 FJ60 the PO had swapped FJ62 gauges into the stock FJ60 cluster. All the gauges are/were plug and play. So at the very least I can tell you with experience the gauges will swap...

I have no experience with the actual dash structural differences between the 60 and 62 though.

HTH,
Nick

I think cruiserparts.net offers the parts for this swap specifically. That tells me that it's totally do-able.

Too cool....thanks for the info...

I have just fired up my 3FE/H55 in my FJ-60 for the first time and to do this I swapped in the dash harness and many other things. There are a couple of differences like the rear heater switch is on the dash not the console. I swapped the FJ-62 gauges into the FJ-60 cluster with no problems. I am pretty sure the dash will bolt in, but you need to change the frame of the dash as well. And I don;t think the rear heater plugs into the FJ-62 part of the harness so you would have to use the 60 part of that harness, but I haven't got that far yet on my conversion. Just got it to run yesterday!!

Why? The FJ62 dash is of better ergonomics. E.g. The radio is mounted higher, so you don't have to take your eyes of the road as much. Also the feel and quality are improved. But most of all it is a matter of taste. I'm a graphic designer and I feel the FJ62 dash is of timeless design, while the FJ60 dash looks a bit outdated. The FJ62 dash design makes you feel you are driving a much bigger truck. But taste is nothing we can argue about :)

Ok, cool, personal taste is a good reason.
I personaly don't like the way the 62 dash looks for exactly the reasons you like it, to each his own.......... So I guess I would be asking the same question, just the other way around.

Haha, I am also a graphic designer and find the 60s dash much nicer...

I like just about everything about it, the 62 dash is too new looking for my taste...

graphic design has some laws to it but most of it is just personal taste and what catches your eye.

Plus i love the tan and brown set up the 60s comes in ( fav colors) I have it in my 60 and love it. So I would really like it in both trucks... Does the 62 ever come with the brown/tan?

Hey lowtide, I'm with you, I'm an industrial designer, 60s dash rules, hands down. :grinpimp:

X2. 60's dash's rule! They match the exterior better as well.

I thought for industrial designers there is only one dash and that's made out of metal :D

Dash Swap -done it!

Hi

I did this swap into a HJ61 about 3 months ago.
Tech issues first:

Top part of dash bolts straight in using existing bolts and clips.

For the upper dash fascia make sure you get the internal plastic air vent part from the 62 that feeds the two centre vents from the blower box. The 62 centre vents are offset 30-40mm compared to the older 60 dash and will not line up.

Your gauges will bolt straight onto the 62 dash fascia although it may be set up with different warning lights or bulb holders in the bottom part which will require some minor internal plastic trimming or wire re routing -no biggie

The 62 dash has extra tabs for screwing the fasicas in so I had to make some small tabs out of sheet metal and bolt them to the 60 dash in the right locations then screw the 62 fascia to them. Again no major deal but just fiddly. I added 2 below the gauges and two around the heater control/switches fascia.

The lower fascia (heater/switches area) required a tab either side and I punched a hole in one side of the dash so a clip on the fascia could be used. All these mods are internal so if you swapped back none of the tabs or holes are visible.

Different 62 layout meant I had to lose the old LC clinos in the dash in place of a flat panel.

Clock pugged straight in. Park light switch plugged straight in. Wiring of rear window wiper/washer and demister is different however. Rear demister plugged straight into 62 switch but does not work, rear washer etc had different plug and no. of wires so that too is a work in progress but not insurmountable.

62 ndash also comes with a handle that bolts to the dash across the glove box. Actually quite handy for getting in and sitting stuff on -drink bottles, binos etc.

The reason for the swap?
We tow a horse trailer with a camera and retractable LCD screen. The LCD screen had to be velcroed to the 61 dash with external wiring. This was a pain to set-up, used to get cooked in the sun and was in full view of potential theives if we hadnt taken it out. The 62 dash has the double size dash opening so we now have our stereo and LCD hardwired into the dash. The viewing angle is better, no wires or box to muck about with and better security as well. Looks good too.

Also the radio is slightly closer to the driver in the 62 dash so I dont have to lean across to use the far controls on the radio/stereo.

I am very happy with the swap and although I sometimes hanker for the long flat dash of the 61 I wouldnt go back.

I am pretty familiar with removing the dash on a 60 series and the whole gauge swap & dash install took 1 day

cheers
Gerard
