DISCLAIMER: I'm a total auto tard. I can change a tire and check the oil, and that's about it. Though I hang about and watch when I can, and have been browsing my hooge LC repair manual as a little light bedtime reading.

BACKGROUND: About a month ago, I purchased 89 FJ 62 with 141K on it. The PO said he recently had the oil changed and put in a K&N air filter. The only work done since I've had it was to replace the busted air intake with a generic one (an LC one is currently en route from cruiserparts.net), drain and replace the gear oil in the differentials, fix the power windows, and mostly recently, install a stereo.

Now a funny thing has started. It idles realllllly rough, and sometime the brake and battery lights blink, especially as I'm getting ready to park. As of this morning, it stalled as I was turning into the driveway at work.

I want to see if that shabby intake hose is falling off. But it requires 2 ppl to open the hood (bum spring on the latch), and I'm alone for the day. This evening I should be able to have a peep at it.

If it's not that, any ideas where to look next?

TIA,
Korina

My friend had a simialr problem on his 80 and was caused by a bum intake hose. The hose was cracked and allowing air to be sucked in. This causes huge problems because the AFM (which is the electrical thing on top of the air filter) did not know about it. This I believe will cause too lean of condition causing the stall. Someone will correct me if worng, but my guess is the air hose.

Good luck.

MORE INFO: OK we looked at the air intake hose, appears to be intact and still fully attached. Air filter is clean. No visible leaks, breaks or disconnects.

Also, I found that when I'm stopped, it'll start to stall. So I put it in park and give it gas. If I'm coasting, I'll put it in neutral and do the same thing. That keeps it running.

Is it possible to adjust the idle? Ah I dunno ... maybe I'll get in touch with that guy RUSH55 mentioned.

grrlscout89FJ62.

does the idle bounce around when you come to a stop? Mine did that after my rebuild, it turned out that I had a vacume leak at my throttle body. To find a vacume leak get some carb cleaner and spray it around every joint of the intake tubing, around the injectors, the trottle body, the vacume lines. If the car idles up right after you spray then you may have a leak where you sprayed it.

sound like a vacuume leak to me. the lights are blinking bacuase the idle has droped to low.

I like propane to look for vac leaks, just open the bottle up(dont light) and hold it close to all hoses, also check the egr gasket. Carb cleaner works fine to, but is messyier

there is an idle adjustment of sorts, its the gold screw facing the front of the cruiser on the intake or whatever it is. Personaly I wouldn't mess with it.........but I have ;)

The blinking charge light and brake light is probably the alternator. When the brushes wear, the contact with the armature is iffy. Replace the brushes.

I had the same problem. You see that cable harness that connects into the top part of your air filter cannister. The cable connector is snug but the wires inside the got pulled back from the connector while the filter was being changed. Just open up the harness and push the wires back into the connector. Hope that fixes the problem. Tell me if my diagnosis was correct.

BTW, next time working on or around the air filter disconnect this cable connector because it strains the wires and you really can't see that the wires are disconnected unless you look inside the connector at the pins. Ask me how I know.

My local parts guy loves that little screw.
Mess it up and it's about $600 to replace it. It comes with the throttle body. Can't seem to get it seperate. Unless C-Dan knows something he doesnt. :)

Hey grrl-
if you come out this month's Cruiser Cruise in Tempe, I'll give your rig the once-over for you.
Just gotta get there before it gets too dark. :D

Thanks again for all the ideas y'all!

Well we tried the carb cleaner trick, and it appears that there was indeed a leak. It was right around where a smaller hose (I don't know from what) goes into that big ghetto air intake hose.

After applying copious amounts of duct tape, it idles just fine. Whenever the real deal arrives, it'll be solved for a good long time.

Now only if I could cure the new stereo's amnesia problems, I can die happy.

I'll have to see when the cruiser cruise is. Seems the weekends are getting booked up so fast this month!
